Wild Mist: Video

I crept my way in through the Mopani woodlands east of Banyini Pan to park amongst the wild dogs. They had missioned all the way from Nduna during the course of yesterday morning and I was so glad they were closer to home that I had to go see them. Kim had already come and gone, so I just enjoyed the mild sporting and lazing around until the sun went down.

Early parade

The lions were calling into the night and I wondered if I would pick them up in the morning. I began the day where I left off last night and headed straight to where the dogs were. The mist was lying heavy over the valley and the sun had made its appearance, beaming its rays through the cloud. I had to stop off and capture the sunrise. The wildebeest were sporting around and I’m not sure if they were chasing a young male out of the herd or if they were just playing games; either way, they can portray some interesting behaviour. Another great thing about these Autumn mornings is the therapeutic  sound of the Magpie Shrike calling amongst their social groups.

Magpies

I didn’t get any signal on the dogs; they must have bolted early this morning. I radioed Kim to get a position, but got no answer. I then heard the lions calling again to the east, where the dogs had been last night. They might have had a run in with the lions and high tailed it out of there. Turns out, they headed for the hills then made their way down into the Malilangwe Dam valley. I didn’t find any of the lions, but they were definitely in the area. I headed down past Chekwa Pan, which has dried up, then across to Hwata Pan to have a cup of coffee.

Bold red hartebeest

Out of the blue Sjambok showed his face, he was looking a little like he’d seen a ghost. I headed over, but he was so jittery that he made his way into some dense shrubbery. He continued south, disrupting a black-backed jackal in the grass and past a heard of lichtenstein’s hartebeest. They are clumsy looking antelope, then I thought they were stupid as well when I saw them trotting straight towards Sjambok - they were trying to chase him off, it was an interesting little incident to watch… and it worked! Sjambok continued on his parade and I let him be to continue with some bird watching.

A gentle awakening: Video

Luckily I had planned to fly this morning anyway, as I’m sure I’d never have picked up the wild dogs. They had moved a long way north from the hills where I left them. All looking rather lean but well.

Bums up!
I’d been doing some flying on a neighbouring reserve just helping out with an aerial perspective on the place for them.

Watching take off
In the end I only got to the dogs after midday. They were totally spaced out hardly acknowledging my arrival. Take that!

Mom and baby
As regular as clockwork they all woke at 5pm for the afternoon ritual. 2minutes later they were all back to sleep. Yes it’s just like that, frantically greeting each other and then fast asleep again. In other wild dog packs, usually when they wake from their afternoon siesta, they have their greeting ceremony and head straight out hunting. These guys haven’t read the books.

Heading out
Later the pack headed on north to the boundary fence. I really don’t like it when they hang around here and the pups showed keen interest on hearing voices across the way.
Thankfully Jiggy and Puzzles were old hats at all of this and headed on west. The pups soon caught up with them as it got dark.
Time for me to call it a day.

Sunset 03/15

The sunset on the way home was truly amazing. I took a bunch of photos and moved on. But it got better, so I took some more and moved on. And it got better and then better again. Amazingly I made 4 stops on the way home to photograph the sunset as it played out its ever changing display of colours.

Dogs in Waterworld: Video

Thankfully the wild dogs came down from the hills at dawn, Puzzles leading the pack again. It wasn’t long until she was back on the main road heading south with her pack in tow.

Listening
2kms down the road she did a ‘U’-turn, back north up the main drag for a kilometre and then west. Now she was heading straight into impala-land.
Soon impala were ‘flying’ everywhere, most with a dog hot on their heels.
The kills came quickly. I think 3 of them, but I only found Jiggy and one pup feeding on the one kill. They left and I found others on another kill and from the sounds there was yet another to the south. All kills within 200m of each other and all after only a short chase of less than 500m.

Stained
The dogs were now all in great shape with rounded tummies. Again Puzzles took them north, all resting in a pan to cool off. It was already hot and the dogs had been on a long hunt. Of course I expected them to spend the day here, but 2mins later Puzzles had the pack on the run still heading north.

Cooling off
It was only half an hour later and several kilometres further that she eventually pulled up in the shade of mopanie trees to rest.
The pack hardly roused and soon before sunset the pups were up playing in a pan. And when the games ended, so did everything else and nobody went hunting tonight. For a change they were spending a night at home.
