His first great journey: Video

Wow, our little guy sure can travel when he needs to. And what a journey it was for him.

Will I?

They had me travelling around the hills on foot after them. It wouldn’t be too bad if the camera didn’t weigh 15kgs (33 lbs). But it’s so exhilirating being on foot in the hills so close to the whole herd. Sitting higher up than them in the ravine, meant my scent was being lifted away, so they were unawares of my presence. And then the added bonus was, they didn’t just pass through the ravine, but stopped right in front of me to dust bathe.

Cheeky

Down at the Malilangwe dam the whole party took a much needed rest and took full advantage of the mud and water to cool off.

Orgy

Later in the afternoon a tropical lightening storm came through the top end of the valley. It was more noise than anything but the little rain it deposited brought some slight relief from the oppressive heat.

Striking

Who knows where the herd will be tomorrow. If our small herd now stays with the bigger herd they could be travelling much further than they have been this last few weeks when our little guy was so small. And with temperatures expected to be somewhat lower than recently, we could see the elephants more on the move and even marching towards where most of the rain fell.

White Rhino Survival: Video

There is still no sign of the dogs.

But all of Malilangwe’s other animals were out to greet us. A couple of herds of eland were watering on the Chiredzi river and a few elephant bulls making their regular rounds to Chekwa pan.

Moving out

In the afternoon we ventured right into the very south of the reserve. I haven’t been down this way for a few years. Our destination was Chiloveka dam (:map:) It turned out to be all but dry. There were catfish/barbel floundering in the last remaining mud and what seemed to be a resident Fish Eagle that would be taking advantage of them.

Spot the rhino

The dry mud on the dam proved to be an exciting playground for the girls. Well especially Penny. A warning of “Careful, the mud looks hard but is soft just under the surface” went floating on by on the same wind that carried the message to her. And then “Daddy, I’m stuck!” And stuck she was. Her one leg just wouldn’t budge and her ears were totally blocked to dads advice on how to extricate herself. She continued tugging on her leg but it just didn’t budge. By now dad was contemplating sliding across the mud to help her, knowing that if he walked across there his heavier body would sink in before even reaching her.

Finally Penny mulled over using a little of dad’s advice. “Pull slowly, very slowly and your leg will come free”. Indeed it did, but then the other leg got stuck. Well only just and soon she was out running across the mud back to me.

Muddy plunge

On our way home we were rewarded with this white rhino cow and her calf. It’s amazing how placid these animals are compared to their ‘bad tempered’ cousins.

Buffalo Rescue: Video

The wild dogs had another jackpot morning killing 2 male impalas and one pregnant female, all only about 400m apart.

Death on the run

They fed mainly on the one male but BB’s pups never made it to the kills. There was frantic calling for them and eventually they got a response but the adults being so full must have regurgitated plenty of food for them.

Love bite

Leaving the dogs in the uncomfortable state they must have been in, we travelled looking for further action. And that we got. This buffalo calf stuck in the mud at Chekwa pan.

Buffalo stuck

I called on management asking what to do. They wanted to help but were all tied up with a controlled burn in the upper reaches of the park, and so asked if I could help.

Muddy dilemma

With the help of the my daughters we managed to rescue the little fellow, well not so little and with a mind of its own.
