Mopane Shredders: Video

After a week away from Malilangwe one is already home sick, the bush has a tendency to do that to a person, besides the concrete jungle has little to offer me these days.

Growing Hyaena Cub

I arrived back only to head straight to my hyenas to spend the morning chilling taking photos around a natural pan they’ve discovered. The light was amazing and it gave me a chance to try out the new lens I purchased (one of the benefits of the concrete jungle).

Glass Water

The mopane worms have come up out of the ground to feast on the healthy looking mopane leaves.

Mopane Ninja Warrior

You can always tell which trees have them in by the collection of droppings on the ground around the tree. It’s like guano, I wander it has any value as a fertilizer? Maybe one could make guano bowls out of it at least - then collect the whole set!

Mopane Worm Cluster

The bush is looking like a pasture, green and colourful. While the grass is still short it makes it easy to spot animals against the green background, like the two black rhinos we saw as we did the loop around the khayeni area, which I’ve been neglecting for a long time.

Black Rhino Stare Down

Christmas is around the bend and I did a little shop myself, but I can’t disclose whether I have actually come away with a gift yet. My wife and I will have been married three whole years on the 17 December, which I can thankfully say have been three great years!

Wild Flower, Striga Elegans

Maybe I’ll collect some wild flowers as a unique gift, which is also within the budget… or maybe I did manage to find a romantic streak and choose a Chanelle no.5 to complement the fresh smell of the falling rain.

Dagga Boy Wallow: Video

I was back at the hyena den early this morning before the sun was up; looks like they have taken the cubs to one of the other nearby dens, because the whole place was abandoned. This was not a good start to my day, because I was hoping to get some good cub footage. I doubled back to Sosigi dam to try and find some happenings on that side, but ended up looking for signal on Tanga. He must have moved a long way last night, because I didn’t even get the slightest bit of signal.

Almost Dark

It is not a simple procedure to track a leopard with radio signal; it can get tough, especially when the terrain is thick bush with lots of ravines like ours. Down at Chikwete Cliffs on the Chiredzi River some of the guides witnessed a breeding herd of Elephant crossing over to the Hippo Valley side of the reserve, not long after that three Rhinos also took the plunge. I took a chance to see what my riverside drive by would bring me – one elephant flapping its ears behind a bush waiting for me to get out of there so it could drink.

Oh well, luck was not on my side today, nevertheless, I continued on a loop around Nyari and Banyini. There has been an old dagga boy hanging around Banyini for a few days now, he looks really old. Today he was back wallowing in the pan and not concerned about who came past for a good stare. Every now and then he would stand up and urinate for as long as two to three minutes! On the way back to base camp I spotted a few vultures circling an area. It is not that easy to find what they are after, but a took a drive through the riverbed to the other side bank where I thought they were settling down. I didn’t find anything but dry bones.

Crowned Hornbill

I continued on my way and photographed our new family of Crowned Hornbills looking for scraps around the house. This afternoon my wife and I had tea down at the river with some friends, it is good to go out without only looking for footage. Normally that is when you get the good stuff, but this was not the case this time. We ended up driving around into the night; it is a whole new world after dark…different sounds, different images, different animal behaviour. Unfortunately today was not to be my day and I had to be content with just enjoying the surroundings.

Wild Mist: Video

I crept my way in through the Mopani woodlands east of Banyini Pan to park amongst the wild dogs. They had missioned all the way from Nduna during the course of yesterday morning and I was so glad they were closer to home that I had to go see them. Kim had already come and gone, so I just enjoyed the mild sporting and lazing around until the sun went down.

The lions were calling into the night and I wondered if I would pick them up in the morning. I began the day where I left off last night and headed straight to where the dogs were. The mist was lying heavy over the valley and the sun had made its appearance, beaming its rays through the cloud. I had to stop off and capture the sunrise. The wildebeest were sporting around and I’m not sure if they were chasing a young male out of the herd or if they were just playing games; either way, they can portray some interesting behaviour. Another great thing about these Autumn mornings is the therapeutic  sound of the Magpie Shrike calling amongst their social groups.

Magpies

I didn’t get any signal on the dogs; they must have bolted early this morning. I radioed Kim to get a position, but got no answer. I then heard the lions calling again to the east, where the dogs had been last night. They might have had a run in with the lions and high tailed it out of there. Turns out, they headed for the hills then made their way down into the Malilangwe Dam valley. I didn’t find any of the lions, but they were definitely in the area. I headed down past Chekwa Pan, which has dried up, then across to Hwata Pan to have a cup of coffee.

Bold red hartebeest

Out of the blue Sjambok showed his face, he was looking a little like he’d seen a ghost. I headed over, but he was so jittery that he made his way into some dense shrubbery. He continued south, disrupting a black-backed jackal in the grass and past a heard of lichtenstein’s hartebeest. They are clumsy looking antelope, then I thought they were stupid as well when I saw them trotting straight towards Sjambok - they were trying to chase him off, it was an interesting little incident to watch… and it worked! Sjambok continued on his parade and I let him be to continue with some bird watching.

And so the anxiety thickens! What’s up with the dogs?
I only flew later in the morning to look for the dogs, giving them last night’s hunting time and this mornings hunting time to hopefully head home. But there was no such luck. They were actually further west from where I had them yesterday. Deeper into in bad, dangerous country. I just feel so helpless knowing there’s nothing I can do but hope they’ll all make it safely back to Malilangwe soon.

I plan to fly at dawn tomorrow to catch them on the hunt so I can hopefully count heads. This not knowing how they’re doing is really eating me. Ruins my whole day, well actually turning to week now. I didn’t realise how attached I was to these dogs, until I wasn’t able to be by their sides every day. But it’s more the anxiety of not knowing if they’re all okay.
I seemed to spend the rest of the day in a dazed state with no real focus. Not good! And consequently hardly took any photos.
I did film some Dassies sunning themselves at dawn. And then at dusk at Bandama pan these Sandpipers were constantly at war with each other protecting their piece of real-estate. Prime country along those shorelines for great hunting of millions of tiny bugs.

A large herd of buffalo were just leaving the pan on my arrival, all looking to have had one glorious wallow.

Wallowed out
I stayed at the pan for the full moon rising. That was a real treat as it rose over the pan and then silhouetted a Marabou Stork roosting in a tree as it floated up over the horizon.

Bronze elephant sculptures: Video

The elephants had a great time at Tsuvuka pan about a week ago. These were bronze sculptures with a difference.
There wasn’t time to check on the dogs today, as I’ve had to head to South Africa for a couple of days.

Bronze sculpture
But there was time to check on the lions this morning. The 2 young males had obviously been given their marching orders as Sjambok had arrived on the scene. Him and Manyari were chewing on the scraps of the wildebeest.
And then, yes you guessed right, they mated! Yes Manyari is mating AGAIN!

Bronze bath
I’m beginning to wonder if she’s not just doing it for the fun of it. She’s now been mating for over a year. Something going on about her conceiving or is it Sjambok?

Wild dogs own the waterhole: Video

I had a pretty cool day chilling out with my dogs at Khayeni pan.

Sunrise 03/17
They were lying in this morning, still at the site from their kill last night, and about an hour after sunrise moved east about half a kilometre to Khayeni pan where they spent the day.
With them sleeping, I took advantage of the early morning dew filming little dew drops in all sorts of places. Some hanging like jewels from thorns, some forming large drops on top of leaves. Spider webs with droplets dangling like pearls on a necklace. All shine so sparkly adorning the bushveld with its own jewellery at that time of morning. Of course it doesn’t last as the sun soon burns it all off.

Dew drops
With the dogs all lazying around the pan, other animals wanting to come and drink were so prevented, just by the fact that the dogs were there. Not that they could do anything to the giraffe and zebra.

Taken over
A pair of Mosque Swallows were collecting mud from the dogs wallow to build their nest. A Woodland Kingfisher was catching grasshoppers landing in the water. At times he’d also dive into the water and back to a branch to preen himself. Flocks of quelea fed in the surrounding area, their wing beats being a constant drone all around.

Dog wallowing
Eventually towards sunset Puzzles got the pack on the move. She headed north, then Jiggy took over heading east, marked on the road and turned south. Here the pups played with a herd of wildebeest chasing each other around.

Challenge
Jiggy and Puzzles weren’t interested in those games and now headed west. They’d done a full circle and headed back past Khayeni.
The pups had now lost their parents and seemed to be wandering around aimlessly. I picked up Jiggy at sunset a long way west with a young impala kill. He fed himself really well and left. Presumably to fetch the kids.
It was now dark, so pointless me hanging around, and I headed home.
