Girohide: Video

I continued with the white rhinos at chinzwine pan, I was attempting to get some sunset rhino pictures, but it was not that easy. I’m thinking that I will give them another shot this evening.

Pastel White Rhino

So it was from the rhinos in the South to the wild dogs in the West. Something similar to that song where they sing “from the east side to the west side”, well I think all rap songs have that line in them, but you get the picture.

Rock Fig

The dogs were back at Chidumu rocks, which is quite a picturesque setting with its rock figs and its huge bolders. They had a festive session, where the adults regurgitated and the pups all tried to climb into the same piece of meat. Kim has returned so I will let him continue on all wild dog happenings.

Mine mine mine

I headed for Manuchi hide after “Dozer” suffered from a high temperature when the waterpump seized – I am again limited as to where I can venture. Anyway, it turned out to be an incredible time in the pit. I waited a little while as the Giraffe began to filter in along with the Impala. It was a fairly hot day at around 36 degrees, so they get fairly desperate to drink.
But, it was not long before the hyenas move in to claim their spot.

Girohide

The giraffe were not that easily intimidated this time and they all seemed to move around the pan following a peace agreement. The hyenas were on to me in the hide fairly quickly, which in turn left the giraffe wondering what was burrowing in the ant mound. The sun went down and with the last remaining light the hyenas left along with me as I had to walk back to the car. The giraffe was left in peace to drink his fill.

The Challenge

Chasing Vultures: Video

The dry sand atomized by a gust of wind that terminates in a dusty whirlwind. The hyena clan then appearing through the hazy glare from the sun setting through the mopane. The cubs awaken from their slumber after the boiling hot day and the sports begin.

Forest Sunset

The cubs have been extremely playful of late and just amazing to watch. The adults often join in the fun surrendering to their social nature. Its been another week at the hyena den and also up on the hill with Kim catching a few extra shots of him with the wild dog pups. Two nights ago we spent the night out close to Lojaan Dam, where a giraffe had died. It didn’t seem like anything killed it, probably just a natural death, but this is any predators dream find. I took along the “Bose” boombox and sounded the hyena calls at full volume.

Giraffe find confusion

I was amazed at the immediate response from across the valley. Leaving it at that and catching a little shut eye, it wan’t twenty minutes later that the first male hyena arrived on the scene ready to devour. He ran around scouting the area confused by the lack of other hyena presence. A nibble and a lick and he guarded the carcass until the others arrived. Nothing much happened until early morning besides one adult chewing on my car during the night. I was hoping a lion would appear or something interesting would happen, but nothing of the sort.

My, what big teeth you have

Sunrise came and the hyenas had barely made a dent in the carcass. A giraffe has such a thick hide, even hyenas battle to penetrate to the meat. Guided by a fresh morning breeze the vultures arrived in their hordes trying to stake their share of the carrion.

Bark of the Hyena

The fun then started all over again, the adults are such a laugh chasing the vultures, chasing each other up and down, basically, it was one big party for the hyenas – and they were enjoying every minute of it.

Tender Hyaenas: Video

Chilly chilly dawn! And nothing to show for it.

Scapula treat
Golly the last few days just don’t seem to be showing any progress. (well that’s for me as the ever not-so-patient filmmaker.) Puzzles has her pups right at the back of the den behind a huge rock where she can suckle in peace and nobody can get to her.
I only get brief glimpses of the pups before Puzzles has them all back in her little hidey-hole.

Standing guard
There was no hunting this morning but that didn’t stop the sub-adults constantly badgering Puzzles to get to her pups. And when they do, they’re very gentle and don’t do anything but sniff the little ones. In time she’ll come to trust them and soon will leave them in the care of one of them while she goes hunting. She must be itching to get back out there on the hunt.
The pack had a successful afternoon hunt arriving all bloodstained back at the den after dark.

Racing
Puzzles ran around frantically screaming and begging from all, and not even 5minutes later it was all over and she was back snuggled next to her little ones.

New hyaena den: Video

Again the dogs must have hunted with the moon this morning and were back feeding Puzzles before dawn.
Nike was still determined to see the little ones but mom was having none of it.

Rocky
The pups seemed a little restless moving around in the small gap I could see through. And Puzzles again kept moving them to the new spot she’d made.

Puzzles at home
By mid morning all was quiet and Puzzles was snuggled up with her little ones.
It was a quiet afternoon too with Puzzles not venturing out her new spot and growling whenever any of the sub-adults ventured close. There was no sign of the pups this afternoon as they seemed happily snuggled up with Puzzles.

Waiting for den action
The hyaenas moved their den about a week ago to this new den where Mark filmed them. They seemed a little nervous as they get accustomed to their new home.

Elephant Descent: Video

There are still times when you get more done in a day than you expect to, but those days are getting fewer and fewer as life goes on. Having said that, I did manage one of these extraordinary feats during the week and captured and edited some elephant and a few extras.

Everyone In!

Today’s video was when a small breeding herd of elephant descended down the hills around Malilangwe Dam to drink. I was lucky enough to spot them on their way and headed straight for a large flat rock that I know is a good spot to sit and wait for animals to come down, while staying well hidden and inaccessible. It was a magic time watching them drinking and spraying mud.

Mud Splash

Today I did another riverside drive ending at Chikwete Cliffs where I had that herd of buffalo earlier in the week. It was rather unsuccessful, but besides the freezing cold morning, was pleasant to get out. I ended up shooting some arbitrary stills to keep busy. The lions that were seen at Banyini yesterday were not the same pride as the one with the snared cub, I was thinking about that poor little guy and I heard they were spotted in the area and the little guy is still alive, now we just need the right time and place to get that snare off.

Meyers Parrot

I headed straight for the hyena cubs this afternoon and again went wild with the stills, getting a little of the cubs playing and the mother hyena looking very suspicious of us. I needed to get home early, because we have a dinner date at the stables for a change – yes, we can still have a good time out in the bush.

What’s on Sable’s Mind?: Video

You might be thinking to yourself, ”who held a council meeting and decided that the bovids get all the attention of late?” Could it be that antelope everywhere complained for the lack of wildcasting and who’s sponsoring this campaign, if it can be called that? Or even more outrageous, ”was I held at horn point by a rebel bachelor herd to swing the camera in their direction? If by some small chance you were thinking along those lines, you’d be wrong!

Zebra Dust Bath

The real reason is that they are actually doing something other than grazing for a change. I even caught a herd of Eland on the airstrip horning each other just for sport, they are normally such shy animals, but this herd has been around Banyini since the grass dried up and seem to be used to the vehicles.

Eland, Malilangwe

This is what happens when my wife is away, I speak and write nonsense. So, moving swiftly on, I headed for Hlamba Mlonga to catch the sunrise with baboons on the hill, but no baboons, so I weaved my way through the Mopani woodlands on route to the Chiredzi instead.

Sunrise Portrait

I spotted some strange movement in the water, which were the spawn of some sort of fish I must still look into. Kim was over on the Hippo side, I took a drive through hoping to catch a glimpse of the dogs, but the signal was bouncing around off the sides of the cliff, as it turned out, they were all the way on the western side of the reserve again.

Schools Out

I ended up identifying trees, I’m trying to bring myself up to scratch on my tree knowledge, but it is so difficult when you’re out on your own each day. I normally take a clipping to my friend Bruce, who I call wikiB, then he raps off a name from memory each time – I’ll keep trying. I have to fill you in on how the hyena cubs are getting on, but I think I will save that for tomorrow.
