Lions Resting on Banyini: Video

To witness lions doing anything other than sleeping, is just pure luck. Lions will sleep for up to 20 hours everyday and only become active in the late afternoon as the heat from the day disappear. This is a time for grooming and bonding with each other and like all children, the cubs will take every opportunity to play.

Lions on Banyini

Adults will on occasion join in the fun after which they most likely will set off on their hunting patrols. Aware that night time is the best time for hunting it makes absolute sense to sleep through the heat of the day, spending as little energy as possible on anything.

Elephant Take To The Hills: Video

The Elephants spent their hot days around Chinzwini, cooling off in the muddy wallows filled by recent rain. The herd seemed to come from all directions as more and more Elephant came for a drink and wallow. The youngsters like always, took the opportunity for loads of fun, splashing and playing in the mud…

Elephant Along the Hills

Elephant herds can consist of numerous individuals and the herds often split up and go in different directions. It is usually at places like these mud wallows and drinking spots that they meet up again. This is a spectacular affair of greeting. Rumbling, trumpeting and touching each other to strengthen bonds between them.

Elephant Calf Coordination and Discipline: Video

It’s been 3 days now that the elephants have stayed in this small area on the Chiredzi river.

Thundering to water

Ofcourse this doesn’t make things easier for me. The bush they’re hanging out in is really thick and I barely see our little calf all day. (This photo looks like elephant in some tropical rainforest. Actually it’s extremely dry. The tall trees behind are still without leaf)

In deep

I’ve always wanted to film/photograph the elephants sliding down the steep banks to the river. And today I sort of got it right. The elephant were already moving down towards the river and I didn’t have time to get out my video camera, so I ran down there with my digital camera. I really needed to go right to the bottom of the bank with the elephant coming straight towards me, but alas my nerve didn’t allow it. As it was, standing on the bank they came within about 10m of me. The big cow saw me and stood tall for a while……. then continued down the bank. And I did get a few photos.

Slowly now

It was cloudy although warm for most of the day, but the sunset cleared up sufficiently to produce this amazing spectacle. Each time I thought I’d got the best shot, but turning around to face the sunset, it had again changed and was more beautiful. What a way to end the day!

Wild kids encounter Chameleon: Video

The wild dogs took us on a Crash course.

Hunting again as usual the wild dogs were back near the Chiredzi after impala. 3 Adults killed a pregnant female, fed well and left to call the rest of the pack. We heard them calling close by for some time but nobody returned. Following up after them through some really tough terrain, crash we did! My front wheel collided with a tree stump bringing us to a complete stop with the girls almost landing on my lap. They were fine, but my vehicle isn’t and is in need of some interesting repairs.

Unlucky mom

My daughters are with me for their school holidays and accompany me filming most of the time, which I love and so do they as I’m always teaching them new things in the bush and how to respect and handle wildlife. So you can expect to see more of them over the next couple of weeks.
