Dove Mania: Video

The puppies of course are growing and their colours coming through nice and strong now. And unfortunately for me they’re still in the same den.

Roan Antelope
Having got back from a successful hunt yesterday and fed the pups, 4 of the adults headed back in the direction they came from, but just at a stroll. The pups followed across the valley and up the next hill. Somewhere along the way they got separated and half the pups headed home. Chevvy took the others up the hill and rested up at a cave. The pups checked it out but didn’t go in.

Attitude
I thought the adults were possibly taking the pups back to their kill, but then having got to the cave, it seemed like they were trying to get them to move den. But that didn’t last and soon the adults were ushering the pups back to their old den.

I want it
It seems to have been a quiet week with the dogs. All doing their normal thing and hunting successfully.

Play puppy play
Thankfully no more visits from lions and actually no sign of them in the area. A hyaena did pitch up near the den today but it didn’t even have time to smell the roses and the dogs sent it packing.

Spider
I’ve been flying my microlight again to help with some work on the reserve. Not having flown for 4months, my first flight ended up with engine failure. Thankfully I was near the airstrip and managed to glide in safely. With a complete carburettor overhaul the machine is purring again and I’ll be taking to the skies again tomorrow in search of some sable antelope.

Elephant Splitting Trees: Video

I was hoping to find “the earless one” last night, but ended up joining the Hippos for another snorting session at Nduna Dam. And no, not that kind of snorting. Kylie came out with me so we headed towards Bandama Pan to catch the sunset. We spotted two Woolly-necked Storks at the pan, which is quite rare. I really need to fix a few odds and ends on “Dozer”, little problems can catch up with you eventually and then it takes the entire day to sort out the vehicle - this is something I don’t look forward to.

Floppy trunk

This morning I headed towards Khayeni Pan. On the way we ran into our old Elephant friend with floppy trunk syndrome. He has caused plenty of soiled underwear in the last while, but good thing I didn’t realize it was him at first and edged my way up close. He was absolutely fine without showing even a hint of aggression. I think he knows my vehicle by now though. Anyway, there was another bull elephant with him and they were having a go at destroying what ever was in their path.

Thorny Breakfast

Kylie was just saying to me yesterday that we never see any Bateleur Eagles any more, and what do you know, we spotted four of them cleaning out a nest in a Baobab tree. In fact, we had one busy eagle day, with what looked like a Wahlberg’s Eagle at Khayeni as we arrived. Out of all the bird life, eagles can be so difficult to identify. We also had a Brown Snake Eagle perched nearby Khayeni Pan.

Juvenile Bateleur

There were many other birds of prey and eagles flying around today. Kim followed the Dogs up and down the Chiredzi River until they eventually crossed over this morning. The signal bounces around the banks of the river until one is left quite confused sometimes. He got his microlight ready for a flight this afternoon to pinpoint their position. Tomorrow he drives his girls back to SA, so I will take over on following the dogs, if he can locate them.

Cooling off before the hunt: Video

Much better day. I was able to stay with the dogs most of the time today.

Sunset monster 02/19
At dawn they were hunting around the base of Sosigi hill and after only one chase that was them done for the day as they rested up at a pan in the mopanie.

Wave
That allowed me a bunch of time to catch up with stuff in the office.
Back with the dogs at the pan in the afternoon and they were still resting. The Emerald-spotted Doves in the surrounding woodland called their mournful cries going on and on. “My mother is dead, my father is dead, all my relations are dead, and my heart goes koo-koo-koo-koo”. And trying to out compete them were the Cape-turtle Doves “work harder, work harder.”

Milling
The dogs made up for their lazy start this morning with an early start this afternoon they circled Sosigi hill and then headed north. The terrain was pretty easy going initially but then they hit those impenetrable thickets.

Ear nibbling
When I caught up with the pups they were milling around looking for the folks. And it turned out they weren’t even a hundred metres away feeding on a young impala they’d caught. When the pups eventually did hear a bone being crunched they screamed with delight while in full flight to get there first for the scraps, of which there weren’t many.
