Tender Hyaenas: Video

Chilly chilly dawn! And nothing to show for it.

Scapula treat
Golly the last few days just don’t seem to be showing any progress. (well that’s for me as the ever not-so-patient filmmaker.) Puzzles has her pups right at the back of the den behind a huge rock where she can suckle in peace and nobody can get to her.
I only get brief glimpses of the pups before Puzzles has them all back in her little hidey-hole.

Standing guard
There was no hunting this morning but that didn’t stop the sub-adults constantly badgering Puzzles to get to her pups. And when they do, they’re very gentle and don’t do anything but sniff the little ones. In time she’ll come to trust them and soon will leave them in the care of one of them while she goes hunting. She must be itching to get back out there on the hunt.
The pack had a successful afternoon hunt arriving all bloodstained back at the den after dark.

Racing
Puzzles ran around frantically screaming and begging from all, and not even 5minutes later it was all over and she was back snuggled next to her little ones.

Excitement Supreme: Video

It was a lovely warm dawn, but only cos of the complete cloud cover.
It didn’t last long and the warm turned to a miserable cold as a gentle drizzle set in.

Alert
The pack were all at the den chilling out with full tummies, obviously having hunted successfully in the evening.

Lactating Puzzles
Then pandemonium broke out in their afternoon greeting ceremony. The screams of excitement were intense as the dogs rushed in and out, and in and out of the den. They just wanted contact with the little puppies, but Puzzles wasn’t that keen, although she is becoming more accepting of them around her little ones.

Greeting Puzzles
As the rain came down again in the afternoon the pack headed off hunting. It was pretty miserable weather but I sat it out. Well only till nightfall and then packed it in.

SCREAMING for food: Video

So you heard the good news. Puzzles has her new pups!
She’s been den bound since Monday tending to her little ones in a cave in the hills. I won’t get to see these little guys for at least another 10 days or so. Right now their eyes will still be closed and they’re hardly mobile.
Puzzles’ last years litter have now just reached a new status. They’re not pups anymore, but subadults. And they’re just as keen as I am to see their new brothers and sisters. But each time they try to approach the den, Puzzles screams blue murder and growls at them.

Zip!

They have to stay away for a while. She’ll be protective of them for at least the next couple of weeks.
Right now Puzzles’ is not out hunting at all and totally dependent on the rest of the pack to provide her with food. They should be more than capable, considering Jiggy had to do this last year all on his own!

Passed out
I’m spending all my time at the den too, familiarising Puzzles with my presence. She seems amazingly relaxed and even more so than when she was pregnant. Maybe she herself now doesn’t feel as vulnerable having lost all that weight.

Lindy in action!
It’s a great time for me too, to have Lindy and Penny there. They’re of course dying to see the little ones. It’s also the ideal opportunity to get them fully conversant in cameras and how they work. Lindy has for the first time been videoing me with my camera. AND doing pretty well at it!

Puzzles’ Scores: Video

The Wild Dogs haven’t been keeping up their hunting tempo and for the last few days some dogs haven’t eaten.
Today they were again at the confluence of the Chiredzi and Runde Rivers. I’d lost them crossing the river and instead of driving about an hour and a half to get to them, I went walking along the river bank looking for a potential crossing point.

Easy stuff

Just then an adult male impala came running along the bank and past me. He was tired but continued down the river bank. A little later a dog arrived following his scent trail, but the dog never found it.

Contemplating

With several dogs milling around on the top of the river bank, I then found a path out the river. As I started climbing out, another male impala came tearing towards, jumped over my head (literally) and down to the river. It was hotly followed by a dog. And just then another male impala came tearing past followed by 2 dogs. But this was the impala’s mistake, running in the soft river sand where their cloven hooves sink deep into the sand compared to the soft pads of the dogs. When they were about half way across the sandy river the dogs had caught both of them. And then it was time for the big feast.

River trap
The dogs ended up spending the rest of the day in the river, playing and chasing vultures.
Puzzle’s has been receiving lots of attention recently. Her swollen tummy and enlarged teats provide for a great attraction for the now year old pups. Puzzles just lies there and takes the abuse. Well actually it can’t be abuse as she really seems to be enjoying it!

Hassling Puzzles'
So far I’ve only found one suitable crossing point on the Chiredzi River and invariably when crossing in the middle of the day there’s some animal to greet me.

Giraffe quencher
I was filming these giraffe coming and going to drink, when this elephant approached from the front. He seemed adamant that I was in HIS way. I had no escape route as I was parked right in the water course and wouldn’t be able to get away in a hurry. The big dude eventually realised what he was up against.

Painted dogs versus stripes: Video

It makes me even more anxious looking at these pictures of the dogs and the video shot a few days ago. I wonder how they’re getting on just hoping they’ll be back on Malilangwe when I get back tomorrow.

Playing
For now I’m just having a wild time with my daughters.

Oh you!

A gentle awakening: Video

Luckily I had planned to fly this morning anyway, as I’m sure I’d never have picked up the wild dogs. They had moved a long way north from the hills where I left them. All looking rather lean but well.

Bums up!
I’d been doing some flying on a neighbouring reserve just helping out with an aerial perspective on the place for them.

Watching take off
In the end I only got to the dogs after midday. They were totally spaced out hardly acknowledging my arrival. Take that!

Mom and baby
As regular as clockwork they all woke at 5pm for the afternoon ritual. 2minutes later they were all back to sleep. Yes it’s just like that, frantically greeting each other and then fast asleep again. In other wild dog packs, usually when they wake from their afternoon siesta, they have their greeting ceremony and head straight out hunting. These guys haven’t read the books.

Heading out
Later the pack headed on north to the boundary fence. I really don’t like it when they hang around here and the pups showed keen interest on hearing voices across the way.
Thankfully Jiggy and Puzzles were old hats at all of this and headed on west. The pups soon caught up with them as it got dark.
Time for me to call it a day.

Sunset 03/15

The sunset on the way home was truly amazing. I took a bunch of photos and moved on. But it got better, so I took some more and moved on. And it got better and then better again. Amazingly I made 4 stops on the way home to photograph the sunset as it played out its ever changing display of colours.
