Wild Hyena Den: Video

I was out to catch the wild dogs on the hunt while Kim stayed at the den yesterday morning, they ended up just chilling at the den so I did a loop around the Manuchi area and past Sosigi. The weather forecast showed rain, but they always say that and it never reaches us, it is still cloudy though, which seems to keep the heat in at least. In the afternoon the dogs were out and about as I followed them past Manuchi Pan moving in a North Easterly direction. The funny thing was that if they continued in the direction they were moving, they’d cross straight over the hyena den! I made a break for the den just in case; the first dog had already reached the den by the time I arrived.

Single file

There was not a hyena in sight, they pulled their typical scatter and run maneuver with the cubs hiding in the den. It’s kind of what would happen if somebody through a hand grenade…except there were no grenades…and no people with any power struggles…so maybe not. The dogs sniffed around the den for two minutes and continued on their way. I continued tailing them, but eventually lost them just before it was getting dark. I back tracked past the hyena den to see if everything was back to normal and was greeted by the usual inquisitive cubs playing and suckling their mother. It was quite odd to see the hyena cub setting filled with wild dogs instead.

On your marks

Tanga was also near base camp last night and drinking down at Malilangwe Dam. I tried to catch up with Alan and the leopard this morning but he was in the hills. The Dogs were already long gone so I continued a drive around the hills until I reached Lojaan Dam, where there was a large herd of buffalo in the water – they scattered on arrival, but relaxed after I sat snapping pictures.

Multi-level Buff

I’ve been meaning to catch up with no ears for a while so it was down to Nduna Dam from there. No ears was near the dam, but he looked down and out, there was no snorting, no charging, hardly any movement from the poor guy. He had taken another beating from another rhino and was looking in bad shape. Bruce, the vet, will be looking into the extent of his injuries, lets hope we can give him a top up so he can recover.

Red Sky Buffalo: Video

I had barely turned into the first corner this morning when I spotted a young leopard dashing across the road, this is the kind of thing that really gets you excited. I was on my way through the hills to end up at Nyari Pan, which hasn’t exactly been a hot spot of late, but I figure something has to happen there eventually as it’s the only water in the area.

Sunrise Buff

Nothing had changed, so I moved on to the Banyini area. A big herd of buffalo had just finished drinking as I pulled up on the scene. I followed them into the Mopane woodlands and then let them carry on, I was wondering if this was the same herd I had at the Chiredzi River the other day, but I can’t be sure.

Helmeted Guineafowl

I headed back to the pan to try catch a huge colony of guineafowl messing around at the water. They had moved on, but this afternoon I was pitter pattering around Sosigi Dam capturing their “fowl play”.

Sosigi Zebra

A lone giraffe had just pulled up to drink next to the guineafowl when Alan called on the radio, he had Tanga on the opposite side of the dam and had seen me, so I headed over to get some footage of the leopard. He is still a little non-compliant, so it was difficult to get any quality shots. He is a lot better now that Alan has been following him at night. I carried on following the dude two hours into dark until I decided to call it a night. Eventually I hope to do some descent leopard wildcasting – patience is the name of the game though.

Wild dog etiquette: Video

Okay, I missed my turn at Wildcast on Sunday. It was Daddy’s day you know. AND as you know I had the most special surprise when I found my girls at home waiting for me! It has to be the best Daddy Day I’ve had!!!
My daughters are with me for about 3 weeks now and spend all their time with me filming. It’s such a treat for them and me too!

Chimbiya spring
The wild dogs have continued to travel extensively and even went right to the very western end of the reserve across the river for just one night and then all the way back east. And poor Puzzles just tags along trotting behind everybody with her huge tummy swaying from side to side. She’s pretty huge now.
We took guesses as to how many pups she would have.
With her being so big I decided she’d have 12. Lindy said 11 and Penny says 9. Your guesses??
A few days ago I had an interesting day or 2 with the dogs. The pups found themselves a honey badger. This animal must weigh about a quarter of the dogs weight, but as vicious as they are 8 pups against one honey badger was no match. The badger won and went off on his merry way.
The dogs moved into the river and I followed on foot. A lone hyaena came sniffing by and was soon sent packing by the dogs. They continued along the river bank staring at the water, terrified but curious. AND of course wanting to cross. Maybe they were hoping Moses would be around. I wasn’t able to help.

River Stare
As we moved along the riverbank stopping periodically to stare at the water, we were suddenly surprised by a lion stalking the dogs. But when it saw me it bolted out of sight.

Lion stare
The dogs were all a little nervous now, and then I saw the brute had come back and was standing on the riverbank staring at me! I had to pull a brave one, as I wasn’t about to lose face in front of the dogs. I returned the lions stare and with the dogs standing to my left, I made a lunge at the lion. Well he truly lost it and with a growl he took off and I could hear him running at pace grunting down the road as he disappeared.
The dogs were impressed…………. ☺

Crossing again
They moved on down the river and chased an impala into the sandy riverbed. I saw the impala cross the shallow water, but it was totally exhausted nearly falling over as it crossed and lay down in the reeds. The dogs eventually arrived but were nervous of crossing. I rushed around in my vehicle so I could film the action and ended up nearly rolling the vehicle in a donga/ravine. While I battled jacking myself out of there I heard the impala die!
Just not getting this action on film these days.

Buffalo soldiers
I also had another interesting encounter several days ago. The dogs were resting up in the hills when a family of bushpigs came wandering into the area. These pigs are nocturnal and very seldom seen and must have been heading to their resting place for the day. There was a boar, 3 sows and 3 piglets. The wild dog pups just had to harass them, but these pigs are pretty vicious and stood their ground. They even wanted to have a go at me when I ventured closer! The pups had no joy with them and the pigs soon moved on.

Wild Dusk: Video

Yesterday afternoon I wanted to see if the dogs would come out the hills for some action, but I found Lindy and Penny in the same spot waiting for their dad to come down from the hills. Talking about down hills, the 21 June was the shortest day and the longest night, which means it is midway through winter and the year is basically all down hill from here on.

Kudu re-appearing

Moving on from the dogs, I thought Nduna was on the cards, but Kylie was with me and she spotted a black rhino on route. This is a rare find out of the blue; we parked watching until it got itself in a tiff and snorted off into the dense bush. We then thought we’d head back to the dogs the long way round past Hlamba Mlonga and found a dagga boy herd of buffalo. Amazingly on the road back Kim was back in his vehicle with the dogs leading the way again. They moved into a nice open area where they proceeded to give a small herd of wildebeest a hard time. It was now dark and I continued to get a little footage using the lights. It is a pity they don’t do these things while the sun is up, the way the dust puffs up in the setting sun gives it such a dramatic look.

On the move

Not to be concerned, this morning I was driving to Chikwete Cliffs and found a large hear of buffalo, around three to four hundred of the dudes. The sun was only beginning to show itself so I patiently waited for its beams to pierce through the woodland branches. This was just what I was hoping for, a red sunrise light reflecting off the smoking dust created from the shuffling buffalo.

Clumsy feet

They proceeded towards the Chiredzi River and I hit Chikwete to see if I had a view of the buffalo crossing the river – it was as I thought, I had the bird’s eye view; and, just to confirm this a fish eagle called from a above and then perched itself in the tree next to me. An hour later the buff were still filtering through, I took a few last minute stills and headed for home feeling rather satisfied.

Dogs on Buffalo: Video

Puzzles’ little adventures of den hunting didn’t continue today. I’m not seeing any further teat development but surely in the next few days her milk must drop?

Afternoon light
The pack had killed early today and when I caught up with them, they were all lazing around in the hills with full tummies. This is a spot they’ve lain up in before. The sands are soft here and nice and cool. Makes a pretty good bed for me too!

Laid out
Although the dogs have been active last night and early today, for me their activities amount to close on zero as they spent the rest of the day chilling out in the hills.

Yoga!
At dusk there was a little movement as some managed to stretch their bodies enough to then go off and hassle a friend.

Always at it
(Of course this buffalo sequence is that I mentioned a few days ago.)

Sticks and Stripes! Video

The last few days were hardly much fun for me or the dogs.
The weather has been rather unpleasant. That would be good English way of saying it. I’ll leave my bad English to your imagination.
For 3 days the cloud has been low, cold and sporadic drizzles. Even the dogs weren’t enjoying it huddling up together to keep warm. That didn’t help me huddling up on my own. It’s about time they let me join them.

Yes I can!
But today the sun again appeared! (Yes I know I’m spoilt with all the sunshine we get but then I’m used to it and so expect it. Spoilt brat!)

Sun at last
In their usual playful manner the pups have been taking on big game, buffalo and zebra. Zebra is a common game but buffalo not so and the other day they hassled them for about 2 and half hours. Of course Puzzles and Jiggy kept to the sideline just watching. Why waste their energy.

Should we?
Having finished with the buffalo, the dogs were at Bandama pan. This is a fairly large expanse of water and as far as I know the dogs have never been there. And it showed. The whole pack was nervous to approach for a drink and then circumnavigated the pan in their tense way before heading off south.

Still nervous
Puzzles continues to grow. She’s looking good, but I think she might still be about a week from giving birth. I know I said that last time, and I might just say it again. At least we do know she is well and truly pregnant and now it’s just a matter of time.
Mark is away for a few days, so I’ll be at the helm. Sorry for you!
