Mopane Shredders: Video

After a week away from Malilangwe one is already home sick, the bush has a tendency to do that to a person, besides the concrete jungle has little to offer me these days.

Growing Hyaena Cub

I arrived back only to head straight to my hyenas to spend the morning chilling taking photos around a natural pan they’ve discovered. The light was amazing and it gave me a chance to try out the new lens I purchased (one of the benefits of the concrete jungle).

Glass Water

The mopane worms have come up out of the ground to feast on the healthy looking mopane leaves.

Mopane Ninja Warrior

You can always tell which trees have them in by the collection of droppings on the ground around the tree. It’s like guano, I wander it has any value as a fertilizer? Maybe one could make guano bowls out of it at least - then collect the whole set!

Mopane Worm Cluster

The bush is looking like a pasture, green and colourful. While the grass is still short it makes it easy to spot animals against the green background, like the two black rhinos we saw as we did the loop around the khayeni area, which I’ve been neglecting for a long time.

Black Rhino Stare Down

Christmas is around the bend and I did a little shop myself, but I can’t disclose whether I have actually come away with a gift yet. My wife and I will have been married three whole years on the 17 December, which I can thankfully say have been three great years!

Wild Flower, Striga Elegans

Maybe I’ll collect some wild flowers as a unique gift, which is also within the budget… or maybe I did manage to find a romantic streak and choose a Chanelle no.5 to complement the fresh smell of the falling rain.

Rhinohog: Video

I’m sitting listening to the sound of thunder and the rain pelleting the corrugated roof. Early rains help squelch the penetrating heat and this is always a blessing when people are screaming El Nino from all corners of the globe. The direct sunlight can really tire you out when you’re working in it everyday, it feels as if someone opened the fridge door to bring relief to the scorching heat. I attempted to track down the lions, but was unsuccessful; however, Kim caught them at Nduna Dam on a kill. What a surprise to find Manyari with cubs! She has been AWOL for months now, this would explain her keeping a low profile, and the cubs are already around four months old.

I managed to run into a nice herd of Buffalo at what is left of Bandama Pan. Again this heat dries up the pans very quickly, but the Buffalo don’t seem to mind doing the mud wading thing to lap up what little water remains. The only problem is that invariably one of the youngsters get themselves stuck in the mud.

This time the little guy was rescued out of the brown glue by Chitimela the research technician, but not all are as lucky. On the way back to base camp I came across a crash of eight white rhino, they were looking like they’d also braved the muddy Bandama waters.

Two hyenas were lying around on the edge of Manyuchi at first light catching the cool morning breeze. It was not long before they returned to the communal den and collected all the little guys except the youngest and marched single file back past Manyuchi and into the hills. These guys are moving around now, I wonder what they’re up to. The ellies had trampled their way past the den a few nights back according to the tracks I found, maybe this spooked them. I was pleased to find all six of the older cubs as I was beginning to think that Chops was missing. So all is well in hyena land, while the wild dogs are showing signs of itchy feat and are exploring a little more East of Nyamasikana Pan, if they end up at Nduna looking for the lion’s share of the Impala, they could be in for a surprise. However, for now they seem to be returning to the fence line where they funnel the impala in between the fences and make light work of what would normally be a strenuous hunt.

Back at Manyuchi pan I caught the sunset with a few cubs in the water and as I was sitting on the ground reviewing my photos, I heard some breathing other side the vehicle. When I looked up I noticed a young black rhino challenging “Dozer”. What an awesome time, the young rhino spent fifteen minutes playing around the vehicle, charging and exploring the metal lump! One older hyena cub was still around and tentatively came to test the prehistoric looking creature. Black rhinos have so much character, I had to wait till dark to see if he would drink. After he crept up to the water I let him drink and then flooded the pan with light to catch him on camera, he was spooked and ran off.

Death of a Black Rhino: Video

A light constant drizzle has accentuated the gloom hanging over Sunday’s events. Tsvubu, the earless black rhino, has died. It is always a difficult one to deal with when you’ve been working with these animals trying to do whatever is possible to keep them in their natural environment, but also offer what protection one can.

Given In

In his usual spot near Nduna dam, Tsvubu eventually took his last steps as the hyenas jumped on his weakened back legs. There are signs that Tsvubu put up a little struggle but was over powered as the hyenas began feeding on him while his life slipped away.

Last Look at Tsvubu

These territorial battles between the black rhinos are part of a rhino’s natural environment forcing them to move into wider areas. For some reason, once they begin fighting amongst each other it rarely ends well, the weaker invariably gets taken out of the equation instead of moving on.

Bull in the HIlls

So what was an ordinary Sunday drive spent with an elephant in the hills, ended with these tenebrous happenings. After reconstructing what happened, the necessary dehorning had to be done. I headed back to the carcass later in the evening and waited for the scavengers to arrive. Nothing showed up, so I was certain by this morning they would be there, but I was wrong again. Besides a few vultures tugging at the loose skin it seems Tsubu’s body has been respectfully left to decompose.

Entry Point

Rhino Repair: Video

Sunrise was obscured by a blanket of misty cloud, for a moment or two a light drizzle fell as the wind rippled the water on Sosigi Dam. I had in mind a stake out of sorts hoping the elephant would be coming to drink. The wind then started howling and even the Marabou stork evacuated. I took a slow drive past the Chiredzi River, really just making a loop around until I would get on the west valley road back to base camp.

In the limelight

To continue where we left off with the black rhino saga, I did my usual scouting around yesterday, but I was more interested in helping no ears and making sure he’d be alright. I popped in to Chitimela, the field technician, for an update. Then after finding out from Colin, the reserve manager, that permission had been acquired, there were no flies on us as we headed straight to sort the young sub-adult out. There were already a few scouts monitoring the guy on our arrival and after the necessary drug preparations, I went in with Colin to get a shoulder shot of the dart being administered.

Earless Black Rhino

He was too quick for me as it all happened in a split second and the dart penetrated first time. The rhino was up in a flash and it was our turn to evacuate. He went down under a thicket and Bruce, the veterinarian, began the work of repairing his horned anus. The heavy mass of rhino then had to be rolled over for his leg to be looked at. Two deep holes just above the toes, deep enough to stick one’s whole finger in, had to be cleaned up and patched up as best as possible.

Sabi Star

It was time to administer the antidote, let me just say, this is where all the fun and games began. The rhino still feeling bullet proof from all the drugs and vitamins pumped into him, ended up in a fit of rage… and I was in the front line. What I can remember about sprinting was in the days of Carl Lewis and the boys - they would be proud. So it was out with the money shot, and instead, a mass of people running for safety. Although the rhino will feel the pain later on, it looks like he is in good shape for recovery - provided he doesn’t get nailed by another bull. All in a mornings work and this afternoon, I ended up driving into that breeding herd of elephant I was looking for.

Full Moon Hyena Whoop: Video

Hyena cubs and more hyena cubs, this is how everything unfolded last night, and again this morning. The cubs attempted to out-whoop each other, which the adults responded to and turned the ravine into a resounding amphitheatre – amazing! Then the mother of two of the cubs showed them how to put those scent glands to use. The den smelled like the hyenas had eaten well and I found a hair ball the size of a Persian rug where I normally park.

Up close

I like to give them plenty of space, which normally allows the adults to make use of the entire area and I pick up more activity. Last night the one adult almost climbed underneath the vehicle they were lying so close. This is great to see, because we don’t want to be putting these animals under stress each time we pull up to the den.

Spots visible

All animals, even within the same species, respond to us in different ways, we don’t always judge the situation correctly, but this is the nature of what we do. The scouts that have been helping track down the black rhinos are occupied with other important anti-poaching tasks, so I wait patiently for them to have some time to do some more tracking.

I took an easy drive to Nduna this afternoon, there were lots of elephant tracks on the road until finally I came across a lone elephant bull. There is no charge or close get away story to be told, on the contrary, he was quite a peaceful young chap. What I was on my way to check out anyhow, was whether I’d find the earless rhino in recovery. I found him hobbling close to the hills looking worse than ever. The limp is bad and he smells like rotting flesh, I’m really worried about him. Oh, I made a mistake when sexing this rhino, it is actually a bull. Only with endangered species, will the reserve sometimes intervene, but there’s a process of acquiring permission from parks (this can be quick with an injury situation). We will check him out tomorrow to decide whether this will be necessary… but heaven forbid we get too close.

When a Rhino Has No Ears: Video

What? Where? When? Why? How? Charged by black rhino at Nduna Dam this morning… Because I was just too damn close for comfort. Nothing to get alarmed about, but luckily my vehicle doesn’t feel any pain…anymore, it took two hard knocks from the frustrated beast; be that as it may, besides a small hole, the vehicle doesn’t look any different (It has always been a pretty banged up bush vehicle).

In the spotlight

I felt really sorry for the poor rhino though, she had an injury on her back leg, this is why she was hanging out right next to the dam under a shady bush. Unfortunately for me, the rhino was on the opposite side where I had no visual. “Never fear,” I said to myself, “I’ll sneak around the bush… that is surrounded by water.” So I managed to get in, but with nowhere to go and I was quite close. Staying dead still for five minutes taking pictures, the rhino began to relax and realize I was there to stay. I then broke out the video camera and was shooting arbitrary things from my door, which as I was positioned, was closest to the rhino. I then needed to get on the tripod head, so I climbed across the seats and moved into position - this all happening while the rhino was still happy with life.

I had now been there over twenty minutes and decided that this rhino was not doing anything exciting, just then a herd of buffalo came down to drink and was startled then stampeded off. I stuck around a little longer, taking my jacket off as the sun was beating down on the side of my neck. This disturbed the whole vibe of the situation, I had already received a shuffle charge so I thought that was the best she had with her injury. Boy, was I wrong! I’m thinking to myself, “it doesn’t look like she’s stopping.” Alrighty then, we took one hard knock as the rhino was shaking the vehicle and punctured the flank of the Hi-Lux. Nose sniffing and snorting up around the drivers seat, she displayed her frustration. I remember thinking there was no way I could get in the drivers seat now, plus there was nowhere for me to go, I had to let her calm herself down and I stayed dead still trying to capture the rest of the display. After the second impact, the Hi-Lux felt like a wild horse the way it was being shaken around. One last snort and shuffle in the sand and she was out of there. I was still feeling sorry for the beast trying to run while nursing the pain in its leg. She didn’t go very far and although a little shaken up, she seemed to be fine.

Pecked

This all happening after I received a mock charge on foot yesterday when the scouts and I finally tracked down a black rhino in the Chimbiya area. In fact, I’ve been finding rhinos all over the show, both black and white. I’m looking for possibilities for the film I will be doing on black rhino. I’d say it turned out to be quite an exhilarating day!
