Mischief at Dawn: Video

Very suddenly over the last 2 days the wild dog pups are now so much more mobile come right to the entrance of the cave. Right up to where I’m sitting.

Dog on the rocks!
The great thing is Puzzles doesn’t seem at all phased with me there and will actually move off while her pups play close to me.
Puzzles also seems to have resigned herself to the fact that her sub-adults will in time anyway be playing with her pups, so why not just let it happen now and save herself the hassle of continuously having to chase them off. And the sooner she can trust them, she can leave one behind to look after the pups while she’s out on the hunt.

Mickey Mouse shadow
One of the pups ventured right out on it’s own seeming ready to take on the world out there.

That big world!
But that was until his big brothers and sisters came bouncing in. The sub-adults just couldn’t resist the little one and all 8 of them were all over it. I couldn’t see the pup for the dust and commotion. They all just couldn’t contain themselves and were overly excited. The sound too, was something else. Eventually after a couple of minutes the little one emerged from the dust cloud none the worse for wear.

Keen
So I suppose it’s not surprising that Puzzles keeps them away from the pups when they’re first born as this sort of mass excitement could harm new born pups.

Return of the Baoboons: Video

The dogs had hunted last night again and had already fed Puzzles on our arrival at dawn. Things were pretty quiet around the den with mom inside cuddling her little ones.

Tooth inspection
Looking rather lean this afternoon, the dogs took off an hour before sunset, heading out hunting.
Puzzles left the den a short while later and seemed to be tracking the pack quite a distance from the den. I like to think she left her little ones in my care??

Feeding Puzzles

The pack returned an hour after dark having hunted successfully and time to feed mom. Puzzles was all over the place screaming at all of them to feed her.

Smiley
While she was on her begging spree, Fuji snuck into the den. Right into the den and snuggled up with all the pups all over her. She was just loving it. (Like my younger daughter when she finds a baby to play with.) But then Puzzles returned and another screaming match ensued as she sent Fuji packing.
Peace and quiet drifted into the night.

Romance on the moon: Video

Still no sign of Puzzles’ pups, but then they are only 10days old. I don’t expect to see them for at least another 5days to a week. But the little ones are becoming more and more vocal by the day.

Submissive smile
Puzzles is venturing further and further from the den too, although she’s very quick to retreat when any of the other dogs come into the area. With my constant presence at the den entrance, she’s come to trust me and will even leave the den with me sitting right there. She’s becoming my number one bitch very fast!

Puzzles home
As usual I’ve been den bound all this time too.
The pack have been hunting very successfully with the moon, which means I get to see even less action in the day with Puzzles.

Morning ray
Having left the den at dusk today when the pack left, we visited the hyaena den only to find the dogs had got there before us and the party was on. The 2 adult hyaenas as the den were having a rough time of it as the dogs were relentless in nipping their backsides, but they still hung around to accept the abuse. I wonder when payback time is coming?

Cocky pose
Mark and Kylie are away for a few days leaving me to take full control of the reins. Standby for real action!

Wild Dog M.I.A: Video

I feel like I’m driving to Timbuktu everyday, these dogs are so far from where we stay, I need a new job description. It is all worth it when you get to chill with dogs. I tracked the dogs west along the fence line and when I caught up with them, they were lying in the road like they were waiting for something…or someone.

Listening....

“Huston we have a problem,” one of the pups is missing in action. It turned out to be a sad day, they were hanging around yelping and calling and the pup just did not show up. He must have gotten lost along the way when they were hunting, or I hope he hasn’t hurt himself and now lying somewhere. I left them late hoping to see the pup arrive, I drove along the fence to make sure he hadn’t gone exploring, but found nothing.

Next step

In the afternoon, they were looking sad and still calling for the pup. It is quite heart breaking to watch, they really feel the loss of the pup; even the other pups weren’t in the mood for playing around - they didn’t even hunt. Eventually one of the pups initiated a search party, and they back tracked all the way until where they were that morning – nothing.

Baboon and the Pleasures of Life: Video

Roosting time for a troop of Baboons is always a family affair…
Baboons spend most of their days foraging for food leaving their regular roosting place in the morning and returning at dusk. The period before bed time is usually a time for games, grooming and ‘adult’ activities.

Moonrize

Grooming not only serves as a way to remove parasites but it also secures the bond between family members. Apart from the fun and games, family disputes are also resolved with members chasing each other around and settling some unfinished matters before going to bed. Suppose the saying never go to bed angry, counts for Baboons as well.

Lions Hunting Baboons: Video

I drove out of camp at dawn slap bang into the Nduna pride strolling down the road.

Road patrol
These guys have been on a big walk-about and now seem to rule most of Malilangwe. Their only opposition is the Banyini pride, but they seem to be spending most of their time next door on Hippo Valley.
The lions continued south along the road from camp through the hills. As they popped over the first rise, baboons scattered and took refuge in trees. They were safe, but only if they stayed there.

Watching
But when the lions walked under a tree with some youngsters in it, the little guys lost their nerve and bailed. They had no chance and were instantly in the jaws of 2 lions, which rushed off to feed on their own before having to compete with the rest of the pride.

Sentinel
It was quite a disturbing sight to see this little baboon dangling from the jaws of this big cat AND still alive screaming. But luckily it was killed pretty quickly.
The 2 baboons didn’t provide much sustenance for the pride.

Striding out
The kept moving around the hills hoping to get other baboons to lose it, but they were now truly entrenched up in their trees.
Eventually the lions headed on south and out of the hills. But this lower lying country in some areas where it’s been heavily grazed, is covered in the devil thorn Tribulus. These tough thorns wreck havoc with the lion’s paws and in some areas play an important role in deterring lions.

Removing thorns
I would have thought though that lions would have come to recognise not only these areas but also possibly the plants that are responsible. But there was none of that. In the one specific area they walked through today, they would have been fine if they’d moved 1m (3ft) to either side of where they did walk, but no chance of that.
Of course they are just LIONS!
