Hlamba Mlonga No.4

What an interesting drawing, even though I have no idea what it might be depicting.

There is a little giraffe on the left side of it. Possibly the upper part is that of a man.

Just a lone giraffe. Not badly drawn considering the very rough surface the artist had to use. Proportions are great.

Could it be these lines are the outline of what was to be a final image? In some ways they could be the outline of an elephant.

There aren’t many drawings at this location. But some of these images are very different to anything we’ve seen elsewhere onĀ  the reserve.

It’s not easy to see, and not easy to paint, these images on this rough surface. But they almost look like dogs having a face off. They more ’stick-man’ like drawings.

Is this the beginnings of abstract art? Or just the artist cleaning his brush? Or testing out his paint?

It looks like the artist ran out of ink. Or maybe he was killed by a leopard while busy with his art. Or maybe that’s just how it’s meant to be and we just don’t understand. We never will.
