Sandy Death Trap: Video

The wild dogs have sure been covering country again, moving long distances north and south, up and down like a yo-yo.

Croc bait
Puzzles takes up the rear making no attempt at hunting. Can’t blame her as the tummy’s now really beginning to grow. She feels nothing to beg from all the other family members, AND she gets rewarded. They’re all looking after mom as she prepares to bring the next batch of puppies into this world.

Shredders
Again the river proved to be the death trap for the impala. Jiggy caught this female as she tried to escape by crossing the river. Those pointed hooves are no match to a dogs paws that are far better equipped to stay on the surface of the sand.

River play
It was a good meal for the pack and they then spent the rest of the day lying around in the sand. I joined them. What a way to spend the day. It’s almost like spending the day on the beach, except on this beach you’re allowed to bring ALL your dogs!
While I shuffled around getting comfortable, moving here and there, the dogs would often come and lie up next to me. All very rewarding. Even Puzzles is slowly starting to trust me!

River adventure
It’s still hard to tell how much longer Puzzles has to go, but a good guess would be no more than 2 weeks.
I have seen her digging at a few old antbear holes in termite mounds, but nothing too serious. I wonder if she will go back to her old den in the hills?

  • Just how close did the dogs get to you when you were ‘resting’ with them?? That’s pretty cool….

  • What joy you must have just sitting with the dogs, having them lie next to you, and especially for Puzzles to start to warm up to you. After all of the time and effort you put into getting the dogs to accept you, this must be an awesome experience for you. Something so rewarding and what would be termed a true blessing. Beyond price. I am so happy for you.

  • IF the dog are getting so comfortable with you, might they not get as comfortable with other humans as well-perhaps to their detriment some day? Sadly, not all of us Homo sapiens are as trustworthy.

I know it must be a joy to have them get so close, but there is no way I’d ever trust them to that extent! Especially with Puzzles being pregnant, and the pack being so protective of her. And especially after seeing what they can do to a kill in 60 seconds flat!

  • Some come sniff me but they’ll lie 10 to 12ft from me.

  • hi Eve. As i mentioned before, i always whistle when i’m with the dogs and approaching them. so they know it’s me approaching. And this has and is working really well in them recognizing me and me only. The scouts walked into them the other day and they took off, but soon came back to sleep where i was. so yes they don’t like strangers.
I suppose i’d rather be eaten by them than hit by a bus. Of course I’ll prefer not to have either option. not on a suicide mission just yet

  • Strangely , I used to do a certain whistle for the birds who used to live out in the trees behind our place,… (I’d put out a bit of seed for ‘em) . after a few months they were very comfortable with me ,basically eating right out of my hands.
Now , I do change my clothes from time to time lol ,so my appearance differed most days and I was sure that they recognised my person from the whistling alone.

I dont know a lot about birds , but I do listen to the tone of their songs/cries ….so I did try to tone my own whistling in a soft manner , which might have helped.

Anyway , Im really enjoying all this action with the dogs, there seems to be loads happening !
Hope they choose somewhere easy for you to access when She has the little rascals :)

    Cheers

  • I can’t even imagine how wonderful it must be to have them lie down so close by!!
