Hyena on the Lowdown: Video

It’s back to “The Great Trek” for all the Wildcasting constituents, we have been on the road since yesterday, with a total of 1600 km to cover!

Giant Kingfisher

The festival is over and the Roscar award was snatched out of our hands by another, let’s say… more children like series. It was, after all, judged by children from a number of different schools.

African Rock Python

I hope you enjoy some more footage from a little while back, I am now chomping at the bit to get back to Malilangwe, but we should be there by tomorrow evening.

Buffalo Staredown

If all goes as planned, I will be watching the african sunrise from our base camp porch.

Lion on the Horizon: Video

The more time I spend at this Wild Talk Film Festival, the more amped I am to get back out in the wild. I have seen some mind-blowing footage today; there is no doubt in my mind that the bar has been raised! Sometimes we have to force ourselves to take things up a level, because it breaks our routine. We then have to start using our brains again, because we’ve turned off the auto pilot. Okay, the doctor is now out.

Kim’s series “Safari Sisters” is up for a Roscar Award tonight, however, Barend (the editor) is more nervous than Kim. The award will be for the best children’s series, it is actually a program for the whole family, but this is just how they categorise these things.

Lion Horizon

So, I’m off to get ready for a wind ding of a swinging Roscar Award Gala evening with my wife - holding thumbs for that award!

Grumpy Elephant: Video

Surprisingly, it was another cold day in Durban; on any normal day we would be sweating like Trojans. I was glad to catch an early ride back to the International Conference Center after last nights evening event. It was an evening filled with vibrant African drumming and dance.

Our table managed to convince the entertainment that it was my birthday, so I gracefully sat through a boyz-2-men version of “happy birthday to you”. I even ended up dreaming of a continuous beating sound with a happy birthday being rapped over the top of it (It really is not my birthday).

Go-away Birds

Anyway, it was another successful day with us learning many new things about HD formats and picking up a few tips on the editing side. There are a lot of hot new wildlife films out there - very exciting to see!

Flocking Herd: Video

A few weeks back, I was filming three Ground Hornbills. It was interesting how they just made themselves at home amongst a large herd of Impalas. Every now and then the female Impalas would even play a few games with the birds.

Ground Hornbill herding

The Ground Hornbill’s deep resounding call has the ability to send one into a trance, it can literally be heard from a few kilometers away.

Manyari makes her Appearance

Out of the cover of a nearby bush, Manyari launched an attack on the herd of Impala. She had taken everyone by surprise and it was only by chance that I was rolling at the time.

Puzzled Look

I’m feeling all motivated after today’s seminars and after watching a few new releases, I can’t wait to get back out into the bush. I’m counting the days…

Giraffe Contest: Video

I have just returned from a pleasant 2 week holiday in England and the first thing I noticed flying in was the red morning sky - back on African soil! For me, this is a reason to celebrate.

Kim and I are both attending the Wild Talk Film Festival in Durban, South Africa. I’m pretty excited about it, I have just come from the registration where I caught up with a few friends from the Wild Life Film Academy. There are a few interesting items on the program, like a workshop on taking aerial shots, I can’t wait for that one.
Giraffe Reach
I will be posting a few clips I put together in advance before I left for England, hope you enjoy them.
Tonight we are being treated to a cocktail party so I am in a hurry to get back to the ICC. I will have a chance to fill you in on the details in the morrow, no doubt… Oh, we just heard that the Wild Dogs have crossed the Chiredzi River and are back on the reserve - they have a mind of their own those dogs, its good news anyway.

Concerned Observer: Video

I’m flying again today, but this time I have the luck of the helicopter that helped with the Sable darting. I’m lucky to be scoring a lift all the way to Johannesburg. Can’t complain about that. Probably 4 hours in the saddle.

Malilangwe magic
It’s the Wildtalk film festival in Durban that Mark and I are attending and Safari Sisters has been nominated for an award.
We’ll be away for the week but will keep you posted with clips shot recently.

Hopefully when we get back the wild dogs will be back. Maybe they’re just needing a good break from me. I hope this one’s long enough!
