We were very excited to hear that the Wild Dogs were causing havoc at Nduna Dam. In a wild dash we picked up on the trail of the dogs. They were hiding from the heat of the sun in the cracks of a koppie above the dam.
As we were waiting for the troops to emerge a Black Rhino was oblivious to our presence and made his way to within a meter of our vehicle. Startled, he sprinted into the brush cover - we left quietly (eish!). Eventually the pups emerged from their hiding place; it was good to see them all there and looking healthy.
To pick up where we left off, the Hyenas were adamant that they were making a stand against the Eland and the Zebra who had joined in on the action. Well I guess there really is strength in numbers then, or they just know the song: “We all stand together”. Before we knew what was what, there was a whole lowveld full of animals wanting access to the dam and these two guys were the only thing standing between them.
We moved our vehicle and I guess that was the sign for “run for your lives”, without the Dozer there they weren’t standing alone and they scampered off into the bush. Maybe if the whole clan of Hyena was there there would have been a showdown. “One who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off,” according to Ahab King of Israel. It was amazing to watch how many animals came down to drink, it was like they were all waiting in the shadows for another to make the stand.
