The Nyari pride were totally chilled out last night and quite happy to have us right back amongst them.
But they weren’t happy with the state they were in. Their stomachs were absolutely enormous having finished off their zebra kill. With all that meat digesting in there they were suffering from overheating and from the extreme discomfort.

After drinking at Nyari pan they spent the rest of the night lying around moving every 15 to 20mins trying to find a more comfortable position to lie in. You would think they would learn each time, but the next time they’re at it again overeating. I suppose it all comes from the fact that they don’t want to share and if anybody shows any interest in eating then they must eat too.

Magwaza wasn’t with the pride last night but we did hear her roaring in the early hours. I wonder if she has possibly got brand new cubs in the hills? When I saw her yesterday she was lying on her stomach all the time and didn’t allow me a peak at her teats.

As the dawn light started creeping in so a silly rain crept in with it. It was enough to wet everything and with the lions now in the hills we called it a night.

Watching this video I was wondering; are tbere in southern Africa lions living outside the borders of national parks and game reserves? Are they shot, poisoned etc. with the motto “the only good lion is a dead lion” by farmers who want to protect there lifestock. Or is there a growing awareness that predators are a part of the environment?

Douwe
Ah ha! Sjambok’s brother now has a name, however, it was a bit too fast for me to make it out! An Alkaselzer moment, indeed, it’s uncomfortable to even watch them.
b.
Interesting physiology of the tongue. I did not know either the tongue was flicked inward when drinking.
you really are an artist. thank you.
I know that domestic cats must do that- roll the tongue backwards to take up water. I’m thinking perhaps all cat species do that…
Ack! You’ve named the bother! What does it mean, and how do you pronounce it??
Thx, Cynthia
Chawiwi?
there are some lions living outside national parks on private land and in conservation areas. but outside of that they are no go!
The dude’s name is CHAHWIHWI. Means he’s a little lost, disorientated…..
I know that dogs have to drink that way as well. Here’s a slow motion video demonstrating a dog drinking (it looks really odd) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63Ch2pNkZwU
Chahwihwi - disoriented
Chihuahua - dry land
Looks like Christmas Dinner has come early for the pride.
