Pups excited over nothing: Video

The wild dogs had headed back west this morning and were crossing the Binya road when I found them at dawn. They already looked well fed, probably from a successful hunt last night.
Moving on west they discovered a leaking pipe that had been dug up by other animals. This kept them entertained for some time while Puzzles lay around waiting but dad had disappeared.

Hot
Eventually the male came running in with a bloodstained face and regurgitated for the pups. Puzzles, probably hoping to pick up on his kill headed off in the direction he’d come from. The rest of the pack followed but strangely the male never showed the lead and after some time they all rested up.
Why wasn’t he taking them to his kill? Had hyaenas stolen it from him?
Spotting impala ahead both adults gave chase and the pups tried to keep up as best they could but were soon deserted.
Mom and dad soon joined them and exhausted the pups passed out in some soft sand. It was only 07h30 and already hot. This had the dogs resting up all day.

Exhausted
With them totally out of action I spent some time at Sosigi dam. It was it’s usual productive self with animals coming and going, although coming more regularly as temperatures again moved over a hundred degrees.
Even these elephant bulls kept coming in to mud bath about every hour.

Back again
I was back with the dogs in the late afternoon but didn’t expect much from them and they didn’t show any signs of going anywhere. Not until some impala came walking by and the adults gave chase.
Puzzles was back shortly but the male only returned about 15mins later with his bloodstained face and regurgitated for his excited pups. And then all lay around. Again why didn’t he take them back to his kill? And again Puzzles went hungry.
