Giant Sunset Silhouettes: Video

First thing in the morning I checked out Manyuchi pan and found tracks of adult wild dogs. At least they’re still in the area and presumably the pups are holed up somewhere in the hills. But I just can’t figure out where. I thought I had covered all the area on foot, but obviously not.
I’ll try flying again tomorrow but this time concentrating on the hills.
There was nothing happening at the hyaena den and I found this youngster heading south from Manyuchi and into the hills.

Young spottie Yesterday I had seen 2 females go the same way. Wondering what was up there I followed. The trail went right over the mountain and down the other side. So where are they going? I think with Manyuchi pan drying up they might be heading down to drink at the dam.
For most of the rest of the day I was stuck in the office. I suppose I can’t complain when it’s only 1 or 2 days a month, and I still get out at dawn and dusk.

Giant silhouettes
At Hwata pan several bulls were messing around on the edge of the pan at sunset. They really weren’t keen on the dirty water, being used to clean water when they are pumping in to the pan. But for the next few days they’ll have to make do with what there is. Spoilt little boys!

  • Those are amazing shots. I try to get photos like that, but only get glare. Fantastic.

  • Haha, showing off indeed.

  • Magnificent photography!

  • Priceless!

  • Beautiful!! I have been thinking about Manyari. If it is uncommon for lions to change prides, why is she with the central pride and her offspring with the nduna pride? I thought only males will venture off and the females stay with the pride they were born into. Can you clarify? Also, I was watching AP and Pumba Reserve had an internal tracking device leaking battery acid into their lion, another lion surgery to remove it!
Good luck on finding the dogs. Those little pups are well hidden.

  • Katie: Manyari broke away from the Nduna pride with 8 youngsters. Manyari has now formed her new pride with Magwaza and the 2 males. The youngsters are now roaming the whole property and are not really a pride as such. They haven’t gone back to the Nduna pride. Once they reach adulthood and start mating they’ll probably set up an area depending on what males get involved. I wouldn’t be surprised if Manyari’s boys get hold of those young lionesses and then join up with Manyari.
it’s unusual for females to break away. But then Manyari is one of a kind.
That’s really bad to hear about the transmitter battery leaking. I can only presume it wasn’t properly manufactured. They are usually coated in a thick layer of wax and 100% safe.

  • Hope you had a good weekend with the girls. Thanks for the additional information on Manyari. She is impressive. It will be interesting to see what happens when the youngsters get older.
