The best thing about today was to be with my daughter Lindy watching the elephant bulls come in to drink at sunset at Hwata. For years Lindy has had an absolute phobia about elephants, which was due to an incident that I was responsible for. So for years I’ve ached to get her to accept elephants again and slowly slowly at Malilangwe she’s gained her confidence. So much so that today she was playing next to the vehicle when the bulls came in to drink. They walked past us and to the water and Lindy was quite happy to be standing next to the vehicle and watch them walk by. In the past she wouldn’t even let me drive within a hundred meters of them.

My day was off to a bad start as I had 2 flat tyres to sort out before I could go anywhere. That and other complications ended up in us not getting out till after midday.
And when Lindy and I did get out there it was pretty quiet although Lindy did notch up 53 birds for the afternoon. (Lindy has a keen interest in birds and for years now she will write down each different species she’s sees each day. Now she’s keen to do a film on Vultures. She wants to portray them in a better light.)
We had a lone bull come in for a mud wallow at Chekwa pan early in the afternoon.

Splashing up
And then in the evening 4 bulls at Hwata pan at sunset. While they were drinking the Double-banded Sandgrouse came in in big numbers to drink too. They always drink at sunset and into the dark.

Shapes
Yesterday morning I had flown and seen these White Rhino right down in the south.

I had been flying looking for the lions and found Manyari on her own near Nyari pan. She was calling obviously looking for the rest of the pride.

So what?

Excellent shooting. The water looked like it was on fire, thanks to the sun’s reflection hitting it just right.

I hope your daughter gets over her phobia and realizes that elephants are wonderful creatures. Her idea to do a film about vultures is a great idea. They do get a really bad rap.
