With the really warm temperatures we’ve been having recently several trees are flowering early, like the knob-thorn acacias, Tamboti and Albizia.

Dawn impala
The baboons are having an absolute feast with the knob-thorn flowers stuffing them into their mouths faster than they can chew on them.

Feasting
The giraffe were doing much the same with the Tamboti flowers. The only difference is the Tamboti tree is known for its toxic properties but that seems to mainly apply to man. (Even eating honey made from the flowers of the Tamboti trees will give one serious diarrhoea.)

Tongue trick
At first light on Banyini this immature Martial Eagle was hunting guineafowl and they weren’t doing too badly shouting their abuses back at him. These are the largest of the African eagles and such stunning birds. His immature plumage being predominantly white will be with him for several years until his much darker adult plumage takes over.

Immature Martial Eagle
The elephant herds suddenly appeared out of nowhere after I just couldn’t find them while flying yesterday. They were feeding in the thickets south of the hills and as I followed I just kept coming across more and more. Again it seemed the herds had come together in one big herd and I was keen to get them all in the open again hopefully going down to drink.

Reaching
But then I had my second puncture and it was back to camp to sort those out and then straight back to the elephant. The herds were moving towards Nduna dam in the late afternoon and I hoped the catch them there before sunset. A small herd arrived at the dam just after sunset but the rest didn’t pitch. I think they might have drunk just below the dam wall.

Sneaking in
Hopefully they’ll still be together tomorrow and drink at a more respectable place for me to film.

Why just one baboon in the tree? Where was the rest of the troop?

Do you think global warming has anything to do with the mild winter?

As an aside, if you get the chance to see the documentary “Wild Ocean”, treat yourself. It is about the sardine migration up the southwest coast of Africa, and the predators that follow them. Facinating.

That martial eagle is indeed a stunning looking bird, and since this is only a juvenile, I assume they get more beautiful and power when he reaches adulthood. Great shots.
