Bushveld Morning Routine

This afternoons wait at the pan proved fruitless. It amazes me how some days a pan has a queue of animals waiting to drink and then other days there isn’t even one. And you can’t predict which it will be. But a day in the bush is seldom wasted. If you sit quietly something is bound to come along. It isn’t always the biggest animal but it is often very interesting. These geese gave me something to photograph and there little marital squabbles gave me a smile .

Later,on the road, this zebra seemed to be inviting me to chase him, looking over his shoulder and nodding a challenge.

Sometimes, sitting by a peaceful pan gives me a chance to reflect on my thoughts and enjoy creation.I think the wilderness gives everyone that opportunity.

  • ah this is a nice video !
You guys have the coolest job in the world. I wish I could be there !

  • Wow! Darryl you approaching dawn was stupendous! Also really like the sunset/dawn still with the sun’s rays.

Am sorry to have to ask you again, how does one access your pictures on Flickr?

    b.

  • Good Morning,

Do you have a backup during filming in the dark? Who keeps an eye on the surroundings?
The fact that one has to focus on filming, can implicate that something approaches the car.

Suppose the following conversation between the two pride males Sjambok and Nduna:

    “Good morning Sjambok”
    “What’s up, Nduna”
“We have signed a contract with this filmmaker to kill a buffalo at 10.00 pm. And during filming he does not have a backup”
“Ah, we have some opportunities here”

One does not want to happen this,

    kind regards,

    Douwe

  • Hi Darryl,

What a great insight into your daily routine. You two have the best job, really. Who cares if you do not sleep as much as the rest of the world.

  • Darryl, Thanks for the video “Bushveld morning routine”, it was so nice to see Kim, (after all he is in my home each morning, ha), great insite on how thing are on your “job” or “work”, oh yes, you do drive on the wrong side of the road!!

  • Great Video, couldn’t help but smile at the Lion’s use of the man-made road to stroll along.

  • Lovely to see you doing normal things like drinking tea while you’re driving (illegal now on UK roads) and filling up with fuel!! Wonder if it costs anywhere near as much as it does here now?!! And nice to see you drive on the RIGHT (well CORRECT) side of the road!
Do those lions mind you getting so close? Suppose they are used to you by now. When do you sleep? Loved the sunrise.

  • Douwe: If it was that easy we’d be making films much faster, but these dudes don’t read the script! No don’t have backup only because it’s not necessary.
Alison: yes fuel here is also rocketing! No we drive on the left side of the road, but in the bush “Who Cares!” Lions are so used to us now they really don’t seem to mind us around. When Manyari was mating she came and lay under the bull-bar of my car and Sjambok mated her right there almost banging his head on the car. Almost like banging heads on the headboard!

  • Hey there! Do you use Twitter? I’d like to follow you if that would be okay. I’m undoubtedly enjoying your blog and look forward to new posts.

  • Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the issue fixed soon. Thanks

  • The other day, while I was at work, my sister stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a 25 foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is completely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
