Day 6 and the tempo slows.
It was another night of mating and not much other activity for the lions.
Sjambok’s brother didn’t hang around and left in the early evening. But for some reason WE hung around with nothing different happening from the last 5 nights.
But at dawn suddenly the lions were active heading northwest with Sjambok taking the lead. He looked like he was about to abandon Manyari, but then had second thoughts. He just couldn’t resist it.
On the banks of the Nyamasikana river the two suddenly broke into a trot. They’d got wind of something. They came across the dried out remains of an impala carcass. It really wasn’t much more than bones with a slight colouring of red left on them, probably the remains from an old leopard kill. But the two weren’t going to let it go to waste and scraped what meat they could off the bone before getting back to mating.
I took a drive down to the Chiredzi River where these 3 bulls were feeding together. They’re all such cool dudes and although young they’ve some great looking ivory already. Should be some real lookers in another 10 years. (So hang around if you want to see them.)
