This little glade of mopane trees next to the road shows how much rain we have had. Even after a few days of dry hot weather, this section of water 6 or more inches deep remains. Getting stuck in the mud is still a worry, the watercourses are still muddy. It bodes well for the year ahead.

The damp earth is prime real estate for fungi and mushroom are all around. I saw these on Banyini under the Chinese lantern trees.

This Three Banded Courser is primarily a nocturnal bird but I have seen them often during the day on Banyini. They feed on insects, especially crickets and beetles, walking slowly and then stabbing at their prey.

I think in this isolated, hopeless case killing the jackal would be the kindest release. I wouldnt have been able to drive away and leave it……

I think the Jackal died on hiw own. He could not survive with a broken jaw.

I can only presume the little guy died. In the conditions at the moment with the grass so long, its not only hard to find the jackal but it’s also hard to follow them. As you can see i was lucky to see the guys only cos they were on the road.

If you could not get a vet to the Jackal then I feel that you should have done the kindest thing and shot if, why does man have to be cruel all of the time, when an animal dosent need to be killed we kill it in the name of sport, when an animal is suffering and is plainly going to die we leave it so it can die slowly and painfully, we are as god to these animals as we’ve the power to help mend or distroy them, why not do the kindest thing for once and give help when it is needed?

My dad cannot shoot the Jackal as he is not allowed guns in Zimbabwe. It will also run away and he cannot find it in the grass. My dad is a kind dad.

If the decision to save an animal’s life were left up to us, Manyari would not be alive today after her ordeals last year.

Good for you, Lindy, to remind us of the situation and what can and cannot be done. I actually skipped that video because I am such a whuss when I see suffering animals.
