Tjololo - 15 th December 2000

The Tjololo Diaries

With the film crew leaving in a few days we are working at getting as much material of me working as possible.
We only got to Tjololo a while after sunset as he headed on his way east across the middle of his territory.

He was very concentrated in his mission marking his territory and only once briefly ventured off course to follow up on a duiker, which took off before he even spotted it. Soon after midnight Tjololo was in Kruger and out of our clutches. We were all rather happy with this move as it allowed us some time to catch up on much needed sleep.
At dawn with clear skies for a change we headed north to shoot from the top of Campbell Koppies some material of me driving around. On the way we encountered a large herd of some 300 buffalo and worked with them a while.
After all the shooting we only got back to base around 13h00. A truly long night.

Lions Awakening

Today was elephant day. Everywhere I went, there were elephants of all shapes and sizes. After all the rain we have been having, mud baths were everywhere. On the way to Nduna camp, I came across some elephant mud wallowing. With them, but not wallowing was one of the youngest and smallest calves I have ever seen. He was clumsy with his feet and trunk as if he had not yet learned to use them properly. In the picture, he is running to catch his mother, legs wobbling his fuzzy, hairy little body and legs wobbling.

This young calf hid behind its mother until its older sister moved around towards us. Then it felt brave enough to stand between the two family members and peek at us before trying to give itself a sand bath. It felt safe between the huge columns of legs all around.

This female klipspringer lives close to the road and has become quite tame. She stayed close to me for more than fifteen minutes, marking the bush to the right of her with her pre-orbital gland( in front of her eye). The scent mark is a black paste which warns off intruders and her mate followed her marking the bush.

I am very sorry that this post is late. This is due to some sort of server error on wildcast.net. The server administrator is looking into it. You may not have been able to get onto Wildcast ( I could not, even to upload ) since yesterday at 5:00 pm. It seems to be working now. Thanks for your patience and I hope you were not inconvenienced. Here is the post, hope you enjoy it.
