Affectionate Lions

It rained again last night, gentle but for most of the night. This morning was gloomy and overcast but at least it has stopped raining for a while. As I passed the airstrip, I caught sight of a massive young bull elephant. His tusks are huge for a 40 year old beast, an estimated 70 lbs, and symmetrical. He will carry on growing in size and tusk weight throughout his lifespan (60 to 70 years) and will become more magnificent as time goes by. He is grazing mostly on stud thorn, high in protein, to maintain the higher needs of bull elephants. If you look carefully, you can see the drizzle that has been falling for three days.
All of the animals are enjoying this time of plenty. The grazers and browsers are giving birth and the baboons have more time to relax and have fun. I love watching their antics. These young baboons were playing on the rocks and one began hanging from a ledge just like Tom Cruise in the Mission Impossible film!

This baboon was just reclining and enjoying the view, content to sit and watch the world go by.

Tjololo - 10 th December 2000

The Tjololo Diaries
With Tjololo still stoking himself on his kill and 3 hyaenas lying around the Lords table hoping for scraps, the film crew took advantage to do a number of interviews and other basics with me.
At the hyaena den after dark the 2 cubs were out milling around. Only around midnight did their mother arrive and suckle them before moving on again. We left too.
Back with Tjololo, he was feeding and then left to the north west. There was still some 30% of the carcass left but it seems he is leaving strung up in the tree where the hyaenas can only drool over it.

He moved on down into the Sand river and we just made it back to camp as a steady rain set in.
