Elephants in the sandpit: Video

At this time of year the elephant crisscross the Chiredzi River now reduced to a slow trickle, a tiny slither in the wide sandy river. It really is only a place to drink and move on. In some places along the river where the watercourse meanders up to the river bank, the elephant may find a spot to mud wallow, but for the most part it’s just a sandy river. Some elephant dig into the sand to get to the cool clean filtered water. And of course any change in habitat is a new playground for the little calves whose days are otherwise spent snuggled between mom’s legs while she feeds.

The first rains of the season are still far off. Although some drizzle has apparently been falling in the last week, it’s only really good enough to settle the dust and won’t contribute in any way to topping the water table or getting the river to flow stronger. And if the experts are right, we’re in for a dry season of below average rainfall.
