The Tjololo Diaries

12th September 2000
For a week now Tjololo hasn’t eaten. Not through lack of trying. He’s beginning to look a little lean but still in good health after one of his marathon walks. He kept going all night only to rest up at dawn. Tough going on us but we hung in there in anticipation of some major event.
At dusk he was just inside Mala Mala on the Kruger boundary. As he got on the move the female leopard appeared. She was nervous of us, but Tjololo was having none of her, whatever she wanted, and aggressively chased her from tree to tree. The smell of urine was everywhere as she literally pee’d herself each time she was chased. When Tjololo moved on she followed in the distance as we heard her calling continuously.

Tjololo carried on south on his eastern boundary and then the southern section to the river. Seemingly happy his rival wasn’t in the area and he’d made his mark, he then zig-zagged his way to the north western corner of his territory. Hunting attempts on kudu, impala, duiker and bushbuck weren’t even close. The full moon was too much for him blowing his cover each time.
