The Tjololo Diaries

8th September 2000
If there is a stronger word than Frustration, it would surely be in place here. All I can call it is a useless night!
What Tjololo was up to I don’t know. At sunset he moved south in the river about a kilometer and then spent the rest of the night in that area calling regularly. This repeated calling tempo could be for 2 different reasons. Or so I think. Either his male neighbour is in the area, or more likely he picked up the scent of a female in oestrus and is calling. She probably headed west across the river and he is trying to lure her back to his territory.

Most of the night was spent just having to listen to his continuous vocalizations while he lay up in the reedbeds.  Only at dawn did he venture a short distance out the river only to fall asleep.
We left him to it. While driving a cheetah flashed past in front of us at break neck speed chasing after a duiker. We followed up but never found it. Presumably the duiker got away.
