A Royal Disgrace: Video

The Nduna pride WOW’d me with their antics last night.

Statue
They were active early in the evening heading north-west and kept this direction all night. Why there, I don’t know.
After walking a couple of hours they surprised a pair of Duiker and the male ran straight into one of them. What ensued was an absolute disgrace to any royalty.

Brutal
The bottom line is “Lions don’t share!” And they’ll even fight and harm each other just to get a few scraps from the table often clawing each other in the face.
Although this is all rather comical it hardly endears one to the King.
They’d finished licking up the scraps when Manyari led them to group of buffalo bulls with a single cow in the herd. The buffalo stampeded with the lions after them.

Dispicable
We had actually lost the lions and then heard the buffalo thundering towards us. They came tumbling over rocks past us with the lions hot on their heels. The cow was old and lagged behind. The lions took her on and quickly had her down. But not for long when her cries brought the bulls back to the rescue. They managed to chase the lions off, except for Manyari who had her jaws clamped on the buffalo’s throat. The cow managed to stand and then dragged Manyari still attached to her throat.
Unfortunately the buffalo came straight to my car bumping into the bull bar. No real harm to anybody and Manyari hung on. But when a bull came to the rescue, feeling cornered by the car, Manyari was forced to let go.
The herd took off again and regrouping the lions followed but never caught up to the buffalo again all night.
They later stumbled on an old dried out Eland carcass but it had nothing for the lions.
In the early hours they killed again, a Grysbok. Again it was a full on fight for just a bite of the tiny antelope.
Before dawn the pride rested up for about an hour, but were on the move again at sunrise. Still heading north-west.

Lookout
Some elephant in the area weren’t happy with their presence and had the lions making a hasty retreat. Once out of harms way they rested up for the day.

The Tjololo Diaries

8th September 2000
If there is a stronger word than Frustration, it would surely be in place here. All I can call it is a useless night!
What Tjololo was up to I don’t know. At sunset he moved south in the river about a kilometer and then spent the rest of the night in that area calling regularly. This repeated calling tempo could be for 2 different reasons. Or so I think. Either his male neighbour is in the area, or more likely he picked up the scent of a female in oestrus and is calling. She probably headed west across the river and he is trying to lure her back to his territory.

Most of the night was spent just having to listen to his continuous vocalizations while he lay up in the reedbeds.  Only at dawn did he venture a short distance out the river only to fall asleep.
We left him to it. While driving a cheetah flashed past in front of us at break neck speed chasing after a duiker. We followed up but never found it. Presumably the duiker got away.
