Elephants love the spring: Video

At this time of year Lesililije spring doesn’t provide the elephant herds with any refreshment, but they can often be found here in the heat of the day.

Lesililije spring

There’s enough water seeping out the rocks to keep the drainage line moist and muddy and this is what the elephant come here for, a cooling off session in the middle of the day.

The Tjololo Diaries

2nd September 2000
My regular daily run had an adrenalin rush to it today as I ran into a herd of elephant. The bush was thick on the side of the road and only when they snapped a branch only meters away was I aware of their presence.. Luckily they were making enough noise feeding not to hear me and the bush was thick that they couldn’t see me. I made a quick retreat and a major detour.
Then before going out in the afternoon I took the kids to play in the river which is now very shallow, about 6 inches, and sandy. They love it especially as the temperatures are already into the mid 30’s. While we were all having fun I saw movement on the opposite bank a ways downstream and next a whole pride of lions came to drink. We watched each other for some time and decided it better to take the kids back to camp.
First thing out working we went to check on the impala carcass. It had been moved into a tree. Then we heard them, Tjololo and Tjellers still at it close by. They’d returned to their carcass and fed sometime in the day.

They spent the whole night in the area doing what they’ve been doing so well for the last few days. By dawn they’d finished the carcass and made their way back into the Kapen river. Another peaceful night for them not being hassled by hyaenas, although we did hear lions close by but they didn’t come in.
