Giraffe dance into the sunset: Video

On my way to look for the elephants I found these vultures on the remains of a buffalo calf carcass. It was amazing that the vultures were already there at first light. Presumably they were roosting in the area and must have heard the kill at night, which got them going before there were any thermals to work on.

Scraps
Mandlovu and her herd were right in the east near Nyamsaan. The only other company they had was a young bull.
They mingled around the area all day and didn’t move very far, but were later joined by another small herd.

Cute Chip
Chipfongwe the brave threatened me several times today coming right up to the car all on his own. Something he’s not done before. It won’t be long and we’ll be head butting each other!

Cheeky Chip
With them resting in the heat of the day I went round to Lojaan dam and with nothing there took a stroll. I was just on my way back when I heard the elephant coming through the hills. They came and drank and moved on with little ado and nobody even swam. This was unusual as it was quite hot today.

Ellies at Lojaan
At dusk I left Mandlovu and at Nyamsaan pan found these giraffe drinking.

Elegant

Then just at the sun was dropping onto the horizon 2 bulls started wrestling. It was truly stunning against the setting sun. A fitting end to any day!

The Tjololo Diaries

13th August 2000
He is his normal self again. Tjololo seems to have got over the virus. He took us on a marathon walk of nearly 15kms following the river on his western and southern boundaries. Besides an attempt on some kudu his priorities all night were to reinforce his claim to his territory. Just before dawn we had to give up trail busting with him as he headed into Kruger.

Another sign of his recovery, he’s started to groom himself again. Just as well as his coat already had a shabby look to it and if he left it any longer, external parasites could have become a bit much for him to control. He’s sure to be his shining self again soon.
