Stark ravingly CUTE elephant calf: Video

It was a slow start to my day as I ventured to Banyini, Chekwa and Hwata pans only to find out I’d left my days sustenance at camp. I wasn’t prepared to practise my survival skills and headed home to collect my sandwiches.

Mopanie or zebra
Moving on into the hills I encountered some elephants near Lojaan dam and at the dam Spud was drinking with another bull. They disappeared back in to the hills.

Heading south towards Bandama I was searching for Mandlovu but she wasn’t in the area and there was no fresh sign of elephants. I think they may have moved up into that horrible bush in the north east again.

Wallow site
Back in the hills at Lojaan dam I arrived just as the herd of elephant got to their mud wallow and they went absolutely ape sloshing around and falling all over each other.

Wallowing orgy
The cutest of little elephant calves, not even a year old, was having the biggest party of all of them. He was in his own world seeming to be playing in a bed of cotton wool the way he fell around, slipped, struggled to get up and just kept coming back for more. But the best was him trying to leave the wallow. The others had moved out so he was in a slight hurry to follow. The bank of the wallow was steep and nearly as high as him. He managed to get his front legs on top but his back legs just weren’t getting any traction on the sides and were spinning like the “Roadrunner” taking off out his starting blocks! Just as he was about to crest the bank he slid all the way back into the sloshy mud. He tried again with much the same result but then with a little help from a big sister he managed to pull himself onto dry ground and back with mom.
