Buffalo watch fowl play: Video

More winter rain.

Ghostly Baobab
It rained on and off all day. One of those irritating drizzles. But then I wasn’t in the field so it didn’t matter much. But it did keep me out the field for most of the evening and I only ventured out there in the early hours of the morning.
Khayeni was hunting in the mist in the early hours. She was headed straight for a herd of wildebeest and I thought “Gee she’s got b…. I mean guts”. But no, there was a lone impala ram in the herd she was after.
It got away.

Impala herd
At day break I kept after Khayeni as she headed south into thick bush country. Not a place I wanted to be but I was determined to see where she would lie up for the day.

Stripes
Well I never got there. The bush got the better of me as Khayeni kept moving in deeper and deeper and my car kept filling and filling with leaf matter. That’s no big deal, and at this rate it will give me enough to start a compost heap at base.

Compost
A few elephant bulls were hanging out at Chekwa, but not keen to enter the water in this cold weather.

Dwarfed
On Banyini the big herd of buffalo had again come in to drink and were now followed but this procession of Guinea fowl.

The Tjololo Diaries

21st June 2000
Another unproductive night as Tjololo overloaded his gut again with the remains of the duiker and then moved on only to pass out and sleep it off in the Sand river.

Back up north Tjololo’s opponent was still with his warthog carcass. In the early hours we did have him in the tree feeding in the mist, which provided for some moody material.
The mist hung around for several hours after sunrise, which gave us time to hunt around for other activity to film in it. We did eventually find an elephant bull grazing.
