Khayeni was a busy girl in the early evening. Which was sure not much fun for us as she hunted impala in some of the thickest bush I have ever tried to traverse in a vehicle. And would not even think of trying on foot. Eventually it became impenetrable and we had to abandon trying to keep up with her.

She decided to spend most of her night resting in these thickets and only got on the move again about 3 in the morning. Thankfully she took to the open area of Khayeni to do her hunting. But prey was scarce. We did see a few small herds of impala but these were out of view to Khayeni as the taller grass reduced her visibility.
She did manage to catch 2 mice! But instead of eating them on the spot she carried them about a hundred meters, as if showing off her trophies, before she ate them.
She had caught a 3rd mouse and was carrying it when something else caught her eye. She dropped her trophy and chased after it but missed. Just then a hyaena arrived on the scene. It found the mouse and swallowed it. Khayeni was not impressed at its presence and snuck away.
A lone Genet scrambled up a tree and into the higher branches to safety. Khayeni eye-balled it for some time and then gave up.
At dawn she headed back in to her thickets to lie up for the day. She could get active earlier this afternoon, as it’s been cool and overcast and we did get rained on last night. Well it was more like being spat on.
It’s strange that in most years it will rain in the latter part of June. Just a cold gentle drizzle to make life out there uncomfortable. (and looking at Tjololo diaries I see it was the same back then)

It was great again to spend several hours hunting with Khayeni but in general not a very productive filming or photographic night. Only 2 photographs! And those were nothing to write home about.

Khayeni is just gorgeous. Those eyes…mesmerizing.
There’s something so soothing about the appearance and movement of leopards, don’t you find? I keep having to remind myself that they’re formidable hunters too. I don’t know how wildlife photographers resist the urge to go all Ace Ventura out there.
The name, Kahyeni, is lovely. What does it mean?
Khayeni is the area she hangs out in. It’s actually the local name for the Acacia nigrescens (Knobthorn) tree
Wonderful clip. The leopard appears shy and very cautious.
Well, there we have it.
I’m familiar with the Acacia tree from, of all things, the educational game Zoo Tycoon. We got it for my step-daughter and I ended up playing when she left town. I learned a lot, and made $27 million (snap) like that. If only it were really that easy, eh? Pffft.
Nuanetsi: Yeah she is a little concerned about us but I’m being careful not to affect her too much. Already she’s becoming a lot more accepting.
Kimberley: Get your act together and get it right in the real world. Hurry!

The beauty of these blogging engines and CMS platforms is the lack of limitations and ease of manipulation that allows developers to implement rich content and ’skin’ the site in such a way that with very little effort one would never notice what it is making the site tick all without limiting content and effectiveness.
