Elephant March: Video

After having such an awesome day with the elephant yesterday, today seemed rather dull.
I suppose it really was sort of dull. The elephant didn’t get up to much, spending the whole day feeding in the Albizia woodland and hardly moving at all. And they had 2 long periods of rest. Probably catching up for no rest yesterday.

At one of these rest periods I was parked in some shade and Mandlovu came into the shade right next to me. The rest of her herd soon followed. They stood around throwing dust and unfortunately the wind was blowing the wrong way so I too got covered.

Cover up
They were all now only a few meters from my vehicle when the 3 small calves decided they were going to lie down for their rest, which they did. This was truly amazing. They trust me so much that they’re not only happy to dust themselves in MY shade but the calves will lie down and sleep with me right there! And they must have spent an hour here resting until Brutus came and upset the party. But such amazing trust makes all the long hours pay off. Truly awesome!

Complete trust
Brutus was being his normal self testing me whenever we confronted each other around a bush. But it really is just a game for him.

Brutus challenge
It was only as the sun was setting that the herds got on the move heading east towards Lesililije spring. Or they might even head on to Nduna dam.
On my way home I came across this black rhino on Banyini. These guys are so elusive and normally only come out to drink after dark. He didn’t seem too concerned with my presence and moved on marking his territory.

Illusion

Earlier in the morning I had the Nduna pride hiding up in some thick mopanie and they were SO well fed. And as I watched the black rhino they lions started getting active as I heard them all roaring to the east.

Just a lone giraffe. Not badly drawn considering the very rough surface the artist had to use. Proportions are great.

The Tjololo Diaries

11th June 2000
Tjololo must have been resting the last couple of days in preparation for his marathon walk tonight. At sunset around 17h00 he headed north, and then west on the Charleston/Flockfield boundary and then north again. Travelling from the south eastern corner of his territory to the north western corner. Even when we lost him going into the Sand river the next morning around 7h00 he was still on the move.

Going was often tough as he took us through some horrendous bush that felt like it was ripping the vehicle apart, and then through dongas so steep sided it felt as if we would topple head over heals. These Toyota’s of ours just take every challenge we throw at them, in their stride.
