Elephant cow on steroids? Video

The day started off with a bang.

Elephant eye
I was with the elephants again all day today. They were just north of Banyini feeding in the mopanie. I approached and switched off and watched them feed for an hour or so.

Display
Then I noticed this cow behaving strangely. But suddenly her strangeness was directed at me. She was trashing trees to the left and right of her and then charged. It looked like a bluff and I sat tight. Not that I could go anywhere in that thick bush. She stopped, ran back to the mopanie, trashed a few more trees and charged again trashing trees with her approach. So it went on for about 10 minutes.

Lying down
The one time she did this big reach for the sky and shook her head. Then went down on her knees and lay down. Got up and charged!

The Charge!
Who knows what that was all about? The lying down bit is really strange as then she’d be at her most vulnerable. Maybe she’s trying to show me she’s not scared. Damn right she shouldn’t be. I’m the one who needs a little reassurance.
Then for the rest of the day she was quite happy to have me around. She has a small calf but that doesn’t explain the sudden change in attitude from the last few days and then again today.

One-tusk was her usual self and twice today came to my car and pushed on the bull bar. Then left me to feed on a bush rigth next to the vehicle.

One-tusk can
The herd didn’t move far today feeding most of the time in the mopanie and moving on to Banyini pan at sunset to drink.
Chipfongwe’s aunt was having a rather loving wrestling match with this bull for about half an hour. They’d put their trunks into each other’s mouths. He even had his tusk in her mouth for ages. Young love.

  • Temper, temper… Whew, way to keep your cool!

Playing a bit of catch up, accept my hearty congratulations on the Emmy Awards for Predators at War. I’ll have to order it.

It was difficult to get the feel for the program as it aired in the U.S., with nearly 90 commercials socked into it. It’s kind of like trying to drift into another world while somebody bashes you in the forehead with a battering ram. Unpleasant.

I wonder, do they break programming up with the same commercial load elsewhere? Or is that dubious pleasure reserved for those of us in the “consumer nation”?

I thought your film about Tjololo was due to premier soon also, what’s the good word on when we can expect to see that one?

    Cheers,
    Kimberley

  • Having a moody elephant headed toward you has to be fairly unnerving! She was in a bit of a snit, wasn’t she? Being female myself, I understand the need to be moody for a few minutes now and then. But, I’ve never toppled any trees! I’m glad she got over her little tantrum before she felt the need to stomp the nearest human!

  • yes they seem to love throwing in commercials to ruin any documentary. But hoping with broadband all this will change and people can be a lot more selective in what they can watch.
The film about TJololo was finished many years ago. It’s called “Stalking Leopards”

  • Many years ago? Wow…I need to do more than “a bit of catch up,” eh? I’ll add Stalking Leopards to my DVD wish-list too then.

Aside from the constant bombardment of ads, programming priorities have gotten a little dotty here too. I don’t know what they’re thinking. I don’t even care anymore. I just want out of that loop.

There are so many of us that want to educate ourselves and test conventional narratives together; the only other resource we’ve got left to do it with is the internet. Failure just isn’t an option for those of us that don’t feel like being effectively enslaved to our baser instincts and ignorance. Know what I mean?

    It’ll work. It has to.

  • i really think that now its more easier to get those documentaries online and never care about adverts(excpet the ones that are like here)

I m so glad i found this blog and get the personal feeling that its not so easy to get from real tv.

I m here in Greece ready to go to the beach and i m reading a blog about animals in wildlife….its so weird!

  • Reading the blog and then off to the beach??? Hmmm…..that’s not a bad life either!!!

  • I just had an idea that I am sure will NOT be popular with the commercial vendors. Why not have the commercial vendors pay the same amount to the photographer/producer of the documentary as they do to the television station airing the documentary? Maybe that will cut down on the number of commercials bombarding the poor viewer.

I am also looking forward to an update on poor Whisky, if you can find him Kim. I do hope he has found a new pack, or at least a companion.

  • If I understand you, that would defeat the whole point of acvertising wouldn’t it? Sure we wouldn’t mind some of that extra loot!
it could take Whisky months before he finds another mate or another pack. But lets hope it’s not that long

  • Junebug,
Running with your idea… It would be cool if we could put cinematographers/documentarians in a position to bargain for a peel off program with advertising dollars.

So say, for instance, Kim produces consistently terrific documentaries and he carries with him a calculable viewing audience based on interest generated by his website here. Instead of having to sell the license to his material outright (and lose out on all revenue generated for the station because of his work) he could bargain for something like syndication rights to reruns and a slice of the ad revenue.

It would be a merit-based reward system that works for both the station and those producing innovative documentaries. Plus, stations would have a built-in incentive to keep the advertisements to a dull roar so that we don’t change the channel and wait for the program to come out on DVD.

Otherwise, it looks like we’re going to have to figure out the cost of producing an outstanding documentary and do a people-powered media gig. We’d front the production cost for documentaries with donations and allow the cinematographers/documentarians to retain exclusive rights to their production. The final work would go straight to DVD and stations could buy the rights to air them (and use that program to generate ad revenue) if they want their viewers to be treated to the best.

    Really, the possibilities are endless.

  • what are you talking bout?why would a WILD elephant be on steroids?!?!?!really?
idk if you know but elephants are huge without steroids…

  • i hope you get to watch more of my films and get to understand my sense of humour. Of course these elephants aren’t on steroids.

  • Thanks for your posting. One other thing is always that individual states in the United states of america have their very own laws of which affect home owners, which makes it extremely tough for the the legislature to come up with a brand new set of recommendations concerning property foreclosures on householders. The problem is that a state has own legislation which may interact in an undesirable manner in terms of foreclosure guidelines.
