Although Armoured Crickets are primarily herbivores, they will often eat carrion when they get the chance, even if it is one of their own kind. On numerous occasions Armoured Crickets are run over when crossing the road and others will take advantage of this free meal. They appear to feed just like large predators on a kill, being very defensive of their prize.

Who said we were superstitious?
A hugely frustrating night!
Having picked up Tjololo a few hours after dark he was out hunting. The going was a bit rough through thick bush and having to dodge wet patches where in many places we didn’t get stuck only because the grass kept us up. Once through the grass we’d have been deep in the sh/mud. Then we had it all lined up. Hearts pounding with the anticipated action, Tjololo was only 5m from 2 impala. Eyeing out the youngster he was paused and ready to pounce. Then the wind changed and the mother picking up his scent snorted and took off, the youngster following. Tjololo charged in after the youngster. They disappeared behind some bush and then both came running back past us and disappeared. Tjololo missed. Not bad action. Got some good chasing footage.

Tjololo continued hunting. Next he took off at a trot. Following we got stuck. Yes stuck! Dale tried to pull us out and he got stuck. Just then in the distance we heard the death screams of a warthog and can only presume Tjololo killed a warthog. The squeals went on for some 10 minutes. At least an hour later we were out and tried to follow up and GOT STUCK! Having got out of that mess, which could have had us digging all night the area was so soft, we were only too glad to reach the road again. Trying from all angles to approach the area where we heard the warthog squealing, we were blocked by swamp lands. Frustrations levels in overdrive!
This probably means Tjololo will be out of reach for the next few days while he feasts on his kill.
Oh where oh where is the drought of ’93?!
Soon after midnight the lions on the waterbuck carcass had their kill hijacked by 3 adult male lions who demolished it for them.
Later in the evening Dale saw an adult male lion swimming across the widely flowing Sand river. An unusual event to witness. But even more interesting, there was apparently a crocodile following the lion all the way but didn’t make any attempt on it.
After a rough night our spirits were again raised at the stunning view we had from Campbell koppies of the bushveld carpeted in mist. It’s hard to ruin ones spirits in the bushveld with so much beauty around
