Dung beetles come in a variety of shapes and sizes with more than 4 500 different species world wide. About 1 800 are found on the African continent. Varying in size some are incredibly small but others can be as big as six centimeters. This obviously is due to the fact that different species perform different duties.
Some will create little balls of dung and fly off with it. Some, like the bigger cousins will roll the ball to cover it in sand and then excavate a tomb and stash all the dung balls inside after which the female has laid here eggs inside. Only a single egg is laid in each dung ball. This will provide a rich food source for the larvae once they hatch. By using the dung for their breeding purposes, the Dung beetles also ensure that a lot of harmful bacteria are destroyed.
