Giraffe roost dawning: Video

The rains were here all day.

Tall sunset

A gentle drizzle came drifting through the reserve on and off all day. Great to have the rain which will keep some of the grass layer green for that bit longer.

This site is about a hundred meters upstream from the upper Chimbiya spring.

The display is very loose and the images are all very intricate.

This elephant with rhino like ears was first painted in outline and then coloured in. The proportions on the elephant are brilliant but when it came to the ears something went wrong. Or was this on purpose? And what does it mean?

The animal below the monster is also a strange one. This could be a honey badger. The head is unfortunately obscured.

Tjololo 01st April 2000

The Tjololo Diaries

1st April 2000
No extra lessons required. Tjololo’s basic instincts have taken over and the couple were mating at regular intervals through the night.
To find the leopards we travelled on tracks that hadn’t been used for the last 8 weeks for obvious reasons. Some of these having been turned into gaping gullies. But again Japanese engineering pulled through and our Toyota came through with flying colours.
While observing some hyaena we were alerted to the spine chilling gurgle/growl of the mating leopards further down the road. A truly awesome sound that will raise the hair on your back when you hear it for the first time. But our excitement had to wait as we got wedged into a narrow gully while trying to cross.
We were shortly on our way and found Tjololo mating with the White-cloth Female, her persistant antics obviously having paid off.

Having had to leave them as they headed up along the banks of the Sand river, the vehicle was brought to an abrupt halt. Like hitting a brick wall, a hidden stump buckled the vehicles tie rod and breast plate but it was still drivable. Some major repairs to be done at camp.

The cool overcast weather has been here all day.

I was out walking and photographing a whole lot more bushmen paintings at Chidumu. It’s such invigorating stuff coming across new paintings. And I find when I’m photographing them I tend to study them more closely and become so much more involved in their art. And luckily so far I haven’t found any beasties lurking in the rocks. Just a lone bat.

Impala doe
It’s amazing how in this cool weather all the animals seem to disappear. Where they go who knows. But all I saw today was this small herd of impala.
