This hunter is also at full stride. But is he confronting this strange beast or is he after the Gemsbok further to the right?
Surely if he was depicted as being right ontop of the animal like this he should have his bow at the ready. Here he appears to have his bow and all his arrows in the same hand.

It’s amazing how this strange animal has been painted. Whatever the animal is, I would say that it is not painted by the same artist who painted such WONDERFUL giraffe. The giraffe images go beyond just realism or representation, with a sensitivity and grace that is just awesome.
This lumpy-legged creature doesn’t look like any animal I’ve ever seen. Mabhakweni 9 shows a similar animal (on the left) that looks like a rhino by virtue of its horn, but the proportions are also incorrect and much more heavy-handed.
The San hunters are often portrayed holding their arrows in one hand, with both the top and the bottom of the arrows being visible. It’s one of the many stylistic ‘conventions’ of San art.
Hi Sue. Great to have comments from one of Africa’s great wildlife artists! Cheers Kim
