The Tjololo Diaries

1st February 2000
The flood level was down enough again for us to cross at Rocky crossing but by morning was up again and so the long drive round. Must have had rain higher up in the catchment.
With the leopards on their kills we went hunting with lions near the Mala Mala airstrip, but their attempts were rather non-descript. They were all very well satiated anyway.

Later found Tjololo had left his kill and gone on a walkabout. There was no mission on his mind. He took a casual stroll not hunting, not patrolling and not going anywhere specific. Stopping periodically for half an hour and then on again, he eventually did a loop back to his kudu carcass. Not much behaviour going on here. Needs to read the script again.
Tjololo’s friendly hyaena had taken up residence at Tjellers’ kill waiting for falling scraps. Tjellers finished her kill early evening and moved on.

Kim, I can’t believe it was that many years ago that we were traveling with you through the night looking for our favorite leopard. I remember asking you questions and surprised when you answered back immediately..you did a wonderful job with the story of Tj. Your adventures with me riding with you in your jeep through my computer is one of the reasons I am now coming to Africa in May..after all these years I am finally going to see Africa up close and personal..so thank you I will be with mamasafari, who I know you met. Also have you seen Tj or know what has become of him.

Mamasafari said she was coming out with a bunch of folks to Mashatu and other places. Enjoy!!
I believe Tjololo is still around. Getting a bit long in the tooth, but still the dude!

Hi Carol, You can follow news of Tjololo on www.malamala.com in the sightings diary where he is known as the Rock Drift Male. He is getting on in years and is quite white around the face. Moves around a lot trying to avoid trouble and other males in the territory. Like you, following Kim’s adventures is the reason I desperately would like to visit Africa. Hopefully one day. Enjoy your trip. Cheers
