We tried to follow them but the ground felt soft under foot and with more rain threatening it wasn’t worth taking chances. Gee I must be getting old ‘cos I don’t want to take chances anymore!

We then headed down to the Chiredzi River but had little luck down there. The area is very productive in the dry season but not now.
But in the afternoon the wild dogs were south of Matsanga pan resting up.

They were off hunting to the north at dusk moving in the Umbrella thorn (Acacia tortilis) woodland near the Chiredzi River.

Kim at what age do the pups start going along with the rest of the pack? And then how old before they are able to make a kill? When Ive listened to them during their greeting ritual they sound more like hyenas than dogs. Do wild dogs make sounds that resemble their domestic counterparts?
What else can you tell us on the Animal planet series you’re working on with Lindy and Penny.
Cheers

They leave the den at 2 1/2 t 3 months and follow the adults. Now is the ideal time (6 months) for them to make their first kill with all the baby impala around. But they still can’t keep up with the adults at full sprint. Probably only when about a year old. Which is when they would probably truly become hunters. No they don’t bark really. Have a sort of bark as a warning call. And then the other main call is the twittering which they do when greeting. Also when hassling another predator, hyaena or lion.
Animal Planet Series is really just dad and the girls having fun in the bush. Learning all about it and doing whatever fun stuff we can find to do. Mudwallowing, dung spitting competition, chasing after the vehicle driving away in the river bed, etc. Very educational too. Cheers Kim
