After a long chase, which left me bashing through bush catching the odd glimpse of a dog rocketing through the undergrowth, they eventually all seemed to have lucked out and stopped for refreshment at a pan. But One-eye was missing.

Eventually he too arrived at the pan, but was well fed. The others realising it then back tracked on his trail and found the remains of an adult male impala he had killed up against the fence.

When they were done with that it was back to the pan for the day.

Late afternoon again they were on the move. This time the country wasn’t only thick bush but really rocky too. I bumped and bashed my way through with many new cursing words be uttered (well shouted actually). Then I heard the squabbling, but it was only a baby impala kill. Continuing north in easier country the dogs came out at the fence and looking lost, lay down and rested.

Their little break was interrupted with a ‘woo’ call from the north. Racing up there I found the dogs on female impala kill. She too was a victim of the dreaded fence.
I wonder if the dogs would be as successful if they didn’t have the fence to help them?

kim, happy holidays! what fence are you talking about? why is it there? you have mentioned it a few times now and i want to understand where you are, and what surrounds you and the animals.
thanks! c.
Hi Catharine. Hmmmm…….. been doing some marketing. See you’ve got your brother tuned in!
Malilangwe Reserve is fenced on 3 sides and the forth side, the Chiredzi River is open to the neighbouring reserve on Hippo Valley.
It’s fenced to protect the people on the boundaries from animals raiding their crops and also to protect the animals from the people. So on 2 and a half sides we have tribal lands. The other half is a common border with Gona-Re-Zhou National Park. And then the river.
This is not uncommon for predators to use the fence to help them hunt. I know in other reserves cheetah also use the fences and wild dogs. And sometimes lions.
Cheers Kim
Kim — you haven’t mentioned Floppy for some time. Can you point him out in a subsequent vlog? Also, is it possible that BB is the Alpha female’s mother? K
Hi Kathryn. I think it’s more likely that BB might be the Alpha female’s sister. Also she might have been the previous alpha female, although it has never before been recorded than an alpha female loses rank. they usually die. Floppy is alive and very well. Quite the character.
